x264 to xvid for standalone -is it possible

if a varaible bitrate was used in the encoding of the x264 is it possible to convert back to xvid - and how would i go about it

load it into virtualdub or avisynth and encode it to xvid

That will work if it is an avi. Could be mp4, mkv or something else though.

But yes, it is perfectly possible to convert and the fact that it uses variable bitrate makes no difference.

You could also try mencoder. Should work whether it is avi, mkv or mp4.
