My nephew has 3 kids aged 8, 10 and 12. He has purchased a number of PS2 games and they are being damaged in use by the kids.

He now wants to backup the originals. He tells me he has been recommended CDRWinv4.0A to do the job but does not fully understand how to use it .... he really is a novice handicap with computers.

Since I have never had a game installed on my computer and have no experience with the application he is talking about, I would really appreciate someone explaining to me the correct procedure so that I can walk him through it over the phone.

    Thanks to all who respond.

  2. Use DVD Decrypter(download of here). With original disk in select mode, iso, read and select a destination for the iso image to go, click the decrypt image button. After this has finished insert writable dvd and change mode to iso, write, select the iso image and click the write image button.

Alcohol 120% will do the job and is better than cdrwin.

Start up the program and choose image making wizard and choose ps2 for the image profile and select a spot where to rip and when finished then select image burning wizard and select ps2 from the profiles and browse for the image file you just generated and burn away.

Also, in order for your nephew to play these backed up games on his PS2 he needs to mod it to paly those discs. Doesn't seem like he knows that....

Swapmagic 3.6,search for this in google,it lets you play backup cd/dvd ps2 games without needing to modify your ps2.

I know that you probably disagree,johns0,but I tried backing up one of my PC games with Alcohol 120% and it completely failed, the image file was corrupt, where as CloneCD completed the task successfully.

  8. U could search the forum.....

PS2 games you can copy with ANY, thats right, ANY dvd or cd copy program. They are not copyprotected. I don't know why people assume otherwise. They are protected once you put them in the ps2 tho

write at 2x, -r media if dvd

I assume many people think that PS2 games are protected as they are fairly expensive to buy and the companies can lose a lot of money if they are so easy to backup.

    This is an absolute MUST.
If you don't have your PlayStation2 modified, it WILL NOT play backed up games.
    At all.
    Ever.

About 98% of the games are on DVD
Just about any dvd software will copy a ps2 game via disk copy
    same for cds also

You can play ps2 games with a swapmagic bootdisk in addition to a (slidecard, flip top, no-solder mod, or some other device that keeps the ps2 from recognizing the tray has been opened)

You place the bootdisk in and then swap for a game without the ps2 knowing the tray has been opened pretty simple to do yourself but you have to swap disks

    or

You can use a modchip you just stick a ps2 game in and go
They are not very easy to solder in if you dont have skill but there are some very competent people out there that can get the job done for you

Send me a pm if you need an installer I know a good one

I actually had some skill at soldering and messed up the board on a perfectly good V5. But some good came of it, it gave me an excuse to buy the new slim one! I would suggest that ANYONE attempting to solder one of those babies in to definatly have a pro do it.

My thanks to all members who responded, I think I will now be able to point him in the right direction.

LS. I was under the impression the forum to which I posted my question was to do with all video encoding, burning, DVD, CD etc. and assumed the backup of a disc containing video of any description was appropriate .... had my name been Joe Blow would the posting have been moved ???

If my assumption was incorrect, I will make sure that does not happen again.

LS. That's good news as I was beginning to think bringing up the previous reference on your site (nomorecoasters) to Princo blanks being 99% successful and the change of heart you now have. You know, ever since reading your findings with Princo I have been using them. Your success rate was 99%, mine is 100%, not one coaster. The very first discs I burnt some 15 months ago still play flawlessly. I am so pleased your findings in the first instance with Princo DVD-R x4 was so positive .... THANKYOU.

I must add there are now around 20 people using the my guide and also using Princo DVD-R x4 and they are also achieving 100% success rate.

Happy to hear you are not carrying a grudge.

  18. I find that funny,Nothing is 100%,I had problems with princo,But I think it had more to do with the "Batch" I got.

    Good Luck.

I would never suggest PRINCO media, but back in the day, some 2-3 years ago, the 4x PRINCO media did do well on the PS2, and for only $2 each. As opposed to MXL or MCC or TY for $5-7 each. This, of course, is after you weeded out coasters.

But the is the modern day. Go get a 50-pack of something good for $20 and call it a day.

To use the modchip, check around for small mom and pop type video stores. It's kind of pricey to do, but they'll install the internal modchips, usually a very good one, and guarantee the work for around $100. From what I've read, the internal soldered chips are much better than the swap chips. I have an Apple modchip (not the computer company), but I can't remember which model. When I back up games, just use DVD Decrypter in ISO mode. If you come across a dual-layered game, remember you have nothing to shrink, so you'll either have to forget it or use a pricey DL. I have gotten it to work with a verbatim that was bit set to DVD-ROM. I belive you'll have to use this, since the games are DVD-ROMs, and my guess is that the PS2 expects a DVD-ROM, not DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL

You can often delete unneeded content from DL discs. At least, that's how it is on the XBOX. Demos, extra languages, videos, etc.

On the xbox is a lot easier than for ps2 you have to manually remove dvd checks and rebuild some files with dummy files sometimes and other times downsample videos but some games are as simple as a removing a file but its a lot more games onthe xbox in which you can just remove a file to get it to work

On the Xbox, you can just rip the game to the hard disk. I think you can do this with the PS2. Of course, you have to have the hard disk and an older style PS2.

In oder to get a dual layered game to work on the hd sometimes its still requied to manipulate files or ps2 however there are about only 8 games or so in the US that are dual layered games period

    God of War
    Grand Turismo 4
    Metal Gear Solid Substance
    Xenosaga
    Leisure suit Larry
Could be a few more that I cant remember off hand

The small ps2 has a disk that will allow you to use and external usb drive but it is soooooo slow and if you are good at soldering there is an external connector that will allow you to use a ps2 internal hd on a smaller pstwo

  28. Hi All,

I have a PS2 with a Magic Mod chip and all my back ups play fine.

However not being able to back-up my new god of war game very easily (the only dvd9 game that I have) I just have to play the original.

However it will not find it on my chipped PS2 (just goes to browser), I dragged my version 1 ps2 from the loft and it works fine, so I have two ps2's stacked up and on the go now until I complete the game.

Any reason (that you can think of) as to why my chipped ps2 will not read the original game ?

    Thanks

    Neil.

p.s. would normally go to my games site but 'category games' has been filter at work

Older magic modchips had problems with some dvd 9 backup but that is weird since that is an original it could be a dirty laser issue or the lase r just could be deteriorating over time
