A dual layer drive will write up to 8.5gb on a dual layer blank disc(really closer to 8gb actual data)
You can do a 1:1 backup of your dvd collection using dvddecrypter in iso read/write mode.
Also I believe most of the dual layers are now 16x so it will be much faster. Of course you can always use single layer dvdrs or cdrs in them
One downside - dual layer blanks are still expensive.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I don't mean to patronise, but it's truly as simple as one writes to single layer (DVD-5) DVDRs, and the other writes to both single (DVD-5) and dual layer (DVD-9) DVDRs. See here for more info:Originally Posted by cccf25

No. Single layer writers write to single layer media only. Dual layer writers can write to both.Originally Posted by cccf25

If you plan on burning Dual Layer. That's what I said at the beginning.. "YEAH DUAL LAYER!!!" Until I saw the price.
When I just had my DVD-R, it was 35$ for 1 DVD-DL. I guess they are at 10$ now. -
get a dual layer, it's not much more expensive anyway, and you might use it, even though the media is still expensive.
the best burners, are nec and pioneer. and of course other people have other ideas, I'm just a nec fan......

they still make dvd burners that are not double-layer capable!?
Sorry, I had to go see about a girl -
I still use single layer DVD+R's for backup and shrink using Nero Recode or DVDShrink, but I'd say its better to buy a dual layer writer as you have the option to backup without losing any quality.
Hopefully dual layer DVD discs will become cheaper to buy over time as here in the UK it costs about £5 for just 1 decent dual layer disc. Not worth buying just yet imo.~Luke~ -
thanks friends for your help but i think that i didn't understand clearly .
i was thinking that dual layer used to record a double version of the film like the original dvds but i think you mean that there are films more than 4.7 GB as a dvd so i need this new media to record it or not?
and no body said which one is the best ?
thanks again for your help

As already mentioned DUAL LAYER MEDIA is expensive but it can also burn SINGLE LAYER media as well. The BENQ 1620 drive is cheap at Computergeeks.com or you could get the BENQ 1640 drive from Newegg.com for $46.99. Check out the BENQ/PHILIPS forum as well as the PLEXTOR, NEC, PIONEER, LG, SAMSUNG & LITEON forums at CDFREAKS.COM. Loads of information on different brands of DVD BURNERS. I just got the BENQ 1640 drive which works great. BENQ has frequent firmware upgrades to support their drives. They have a software called QSUITE which is a tool to use in burning dvds. PLEXTOR has there own software called PLEXTOOLS which you can use with their drives except for the PLEXTOR 740 which is a REBADGED BENQ 1640. I've also read that SONY's 810 drive (not sure about the model number) is also a REBADGED BENQ 1640.Originally Posted by cccf25
