I was wondering about this, because I juts purchased a Panasonic PV-GS12, and don't have a firewire card or wire. I used the USB port to transfer my videos with Windows Movie Maker. To say the least, I wasn't impressed. According to that quote, a firewire transfer will be much faster and of better quality than the USB I am using now? I don't know whether to buy a firewire port or not, I just want to be sure that there will be a big different in the clarity, and not just the speed. Will it be that noticeable? Most MiniDV or Digital8 camcorders only provide a highly compressed video stream on the USB port intended for internet streaming. The USB port is also used for still transfer.
To get a full quality DV transfer, you need to use the IEEE-1394 (aka Firewire, ILink) ports.

dv is not raw, I believe it's compressed 5:1
Just because you aren't paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!
