  1. Most MiniDV or Digital8 camcorders only provide a highly compressed video stream on the USB port intended for internet streaming. The USB port is also used for still transfer.

To get a full quality DV transfer, you need to use the IEEE-1394 (aka Firewire, ILink) ports.
I was wondering about this, because I juts purchased a Panasonic PV-GS12, and don't have a firewire card or wire. I used the USB port to transfer my videos with Windows Movie Maker. To say the least, I wasn't impressed. According to that quote, a firewire transfer will be much faster and of better quality than the USB I am using now? I don't know whether to buy a firewire port or not, I just want to be sure that there will be a big different in the clarity, and not just the speed. Will it be that noticeable?

Yes to get the full quality of the DV video use firewire. Just remember that it is raw video not compressed.
When it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!!

Just because you aren't paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

  4. And it won't be any faster -- it will still be real time.
