  1. I've been trying to convert videos on my computer (mainly avi, some mpg) to SVCDs so that I can watch them on my DVD player, but I can't work out how to do so.

I've tried using AVI2DVD and Boilsoft AVI to VCD/SVCD/DVD Converter, but neither seem to work. I select to convert the AVI file into SVCD format, but then when it's finished all it gives me is an mpeg file. I thought SVCD files were .bin and .cue, that you then burn as a disc image? Where am I going wrong? Am I supposed to burn the mpeg file to a disc? Do I need to do something different to give me .bin and .cue files?

Also, once I've worked out how to convert AVI files to SVCD, is there anyway to burn multiple AVI files onto one SVCD, or is it one video per disc?

Any help is appreciated, but please bare in mind that I'm a total newbie to this, so please try to explain things in as little technical detail and as simple as possible.

    Thanks

In most cases, you won't want too, as the quality will decrease.

But doesn't that just give me an mpeg file? What do I do with the mpeg file?

You will need to convert the avi to mpg (ensure that the mpg file meets svcd specs), split the file into 2 or 3 pieces and then burn.

All of the above steps are covered in the HOW TO section.

  8. An Svcd is a particular configuration of MPG file.

A bin/cue is a disk image, could be of anything.

hands down the best and fastest. I think I've tried just about everything and this is the only one that works well for me.

worked OK too. Both of these are trialware (I think).

Don't waste your time with anything else and while youre at it why not just convert to DVD instead of SVCD. OF course the quality will depend on the source but you can fit a lot more on just one disc.

You can then use DVD Decrypter to burn to DVD

  10. Keeping in mind that SVCD discs hold less than 50 minutes per disc, so it becomes not how many AVIs per disc but how many discs per AVI.

    I don't have a DVD writer unfortunately.

I've just converted a movie using TMPGEnc, but yeah the mpeg has come out as about 1.3 GB, so won't fit on a single disc.
But now I have converted to an mpeg with that program, how do I burn it onto a disc using Nero? Do I select the "burn SVCD" option and just drag the mpeg file into it there?

Do VCDs hold more than SVCDs, but lower quality? If I burn it was an VCD instead, will it all fit on one disc? My DVD player says its plays SVCDs, so does that mean it will also play VCDs?

    Thanks

dvd2svcd can use avi as the input and will output to cue/bin svcd files. I recommend the doom9 guides for setting it up.

  16. Yes VCD can hold more per disk 80 Minutes on a 700 mb disk but at lower quality. Only way to tell if it works in your machine is try but it should as it is a dvd resolution with lower audio.

    Cheers
