They all do 256k stereo AC3,
    sometimes 384k stereo AC3 in 1-hour modes.

    It all depend on model/brand.
I had in my hands some Nikkai or Nippon +R only recorder (or some similiar sounding name of no-brand brand ) and it did only 192kbps at every speed.
I went through its entire menu and all the possible setting options (manual was in some asian language only) and there was no way to change it.
Imagine recording some concerts on it ...

yes, if i make dvd using computer with ac3-2 and bit-rate 192kbps the sound not good, i've been tested with bose lifestyle 35 with volume 70.

i don't know when using dvd-r DL in dvd recorder, i think the bit rate to be optimal?

Some better brands or models probably do 'optimize' audio bitrate indeed (like 384kbps at 1hr mode and gradually dropping to perhaps 192kbps at EP mode), but certainly its not an option that is available on every standalone recoder

  6. If you have any commercial dvd's, does the AC-3 track sound bad? I checked my collection of commercial dvd's and they all report this,

For the Dolby Digital 5.1 track the bitrate is often 384Kbps or 448Kbps.

192k-384k is all fine for stereo.

However, I consider 256k to be the best compression with the least amount of loss. Although some of this depends on the encoder. 256k is the safe one.

i think the best dvd-recorder with good picture quality is the latest jvc, pioneer and sony - but not all support DVD±R/RW and DVD±R/RW DL.

for me, using dvd-recorder actually to reduce encoding time.

how much optimal video and audio bitrate can handle by dvd-recorder (i think base of time i.e. 30minute have video bitrate 9200bps and audio bitrate 448k ac3-2)? so if i have movie 1:30hour, i'm making 3 DVD±RW and merge it in computer (tweak audio bitrate or add DTS sound), burn-it using DVD±R DL or dvdshrink when using DVD±R

    I have here a Sony RDR-HX710 DVD/HD recorder for testing/playing
The built in TBC and noise filters really work well.
I copied some old VHS and video8 recordings with great results!
Very easy operating and works with + and - disks.
