I have a soundblaster live 5.1 and a sony slv-n81 vhs player with hi fi stereo. It seems when I capture using an At radeon 64ddr card I only hear sound from left channel. Whats going on?

This is going to sound stupid but make sure you have a stereo jack into your sound card and not mono. If not, you can get exactly the problem you describe.

Soundblaster has one line in. I used an RCA jack attachment going from two to one so I could connect it to the single 8mm jack of my sound card. Is that what you meant? If not what would be the proper set up to record stereo?

Here are several things to check:
1. Recording Audio Properties. Check to make sure balance isn't set all the way to the left. (This very problem plagued me for about an hour before I discovered that).
2. Check the playback Audio Properties to make sure balance isn't set all the way to the left.
3. Check to make sure you aren't plugged into the Mic jac (which is mono).
4. Your cable should be stereo. Check that there are three sections (L, R, and ground) on the connector.
5. And of course, check your audio equipment: connections, balance, speakers, headphones, etc.
Good luck!
