  1. This person i know bought a CD player (portable normal ones) and he wanted one that also plays vcd. I think they bought it from Radio Shack. it is a - Phillips eXpanium - and he was told when he bought it that it can play VCD's. I checked the net and it appears the player is just a normal one. They told him that he needs to connect it to TV using an RCA cable.. I have no idea what it is. so is it true? can a normal CD player play VCD if it has a "RCA cable"

Does the CD player have Video Out? I highly doubt it does. what's the brand name and model of the CD player? Without knowing this, a proper answer is not possible.

  4. Aside from connectivity, MPEG-1 decoders are required within the unit itself.

    They lied.

A quick google search revealed that unit plays audio cd's, mp3 cd's, Audio cd's burned on CD-R and -RW.

Correct on the cabling. if the CD Player support video, there would be a video out jack that looks just like the headphone jack. The link provided is to the German made phillips branded version. Color and style may vary depending on your location on the globe. However, VCD is not possible with this device.

if it's one thing I've learned, next to Best Buy employees, Radio Shack has the worst tech representatives available. Read your packaging well before purchase. Never trust what they say in the store. Radio Shack salepeople work on commission. They'd tell you their clock radios could cook 6 course meals, if they thought you'd believe them and buy one.

  10. I have a CD player that can play VCDs, well the audio from them anyways. It wasn't listed as a feature on the package, but I accidently put one in there and it started playing. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I don't think there is such thing as one with video out though.
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

Much better off getting a portable DVD player that could play all of the below...there are a number of them in the $150-250 US range.

    1. DVD-Video
    2. CD Audio
    3. VCD (Video CD)
    4. mp3 (and maybe wma, too)
    5. JPEG

...my experience has been that Radio Shack (usually) has lots of techno-geeks who, although they are still out to make a buck and will push things on you, do understand the technology and the merits of the various features. If you know the right lingo/buzzwords, they'll think you're cool and won't try to BS you anyway. Unlike BB, which STINKS! in this regard.

  12. A philips CDI player could play VCD.

They're not made anymore, but if one finds a cheap second-hand model (with video cartridge in the back) it will work.
