  1. I have a Marantz DV4100 DVD player. It plays VCD's fine and if I go into setup and change "Digital Audio" from "All" to "PCM only" it plays SVCD's too.

Does somebody know how to avoid going into setup every time I want to play a SVCD?
Does somebody know if this DVD player is actually a Philips, and if so what make?
I don't have a counter when playing (S)VCD's. Is there a way to get a counter?

Maybe a firmware upgrade would fix the problems I described above, but Marantz doesn't offer them on their site. Maybe someone could provide me with such an upgrade?
I've also heard about "P-codes" on Philips DVD-players to enable/disable functions. Do these work on Marantz players too ?(I suppose they would if it's really a Philips inside) If so, could somebody give me a list of these codes?

I know I'm asking quite a few questions here, but I like to get the most out of my player.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.
    Regards,

    Willem

do you know what firmware is set on your player, you could perhaps use the same firmware than the one offered by philips. I heard that some p-codes for philips work with marantz there is just a different way to enter it...
    play, 274, (your p-code) 000 000 000, play

  3. Thanks Lapin for your reply. I don't know what firmware version I have. Maybe I have to open the player and see if I can find the version number on the chip.
Do you have a list of p-codes or know a site that lists them?

    Hi,

here you can find what firmware do you have :http://www.home.zonnet.nl/jeroenverhaar/en/index.htm
I have a list of p-codes (only 3 for marantz) the rest is for philips but if you have the same firmware as a philips player (7.12, 7.22, 9.25, 9,28, ..), it should be compatible.

  5. I've spent some time browsing through the forum on regionhacks.datatestlab.com. There's lots of p-code related stuff there. I also checked Jeroen Verhaar's site. The RC-6 hack using a Palm works on the DV4100 too.
Now I'm sure that my Marantz is in fact a Philips inside. Using a different P-code (53,54 or 55) gave it the Philips startup screen too. I also got extra menu items but they didn't work, probably since the required hardware wasn't there.
The funny thing is when changing back to the original p-code (P12) using the RC-6 hack I get a Philips black and white (NTSC???) startup screen. I checked the firmware string and it's identical to the original before altering p-codes. When I change it to P12 using Play 274 012 000 000 000 Play; I get the original Marantz startup screen and the original firmware string. I understood that RC-6 code has the same effect as Play 274 except for the 25x counter remaining the same when using the RC-6 method. Apparently there is another difference too between the two methods.

I also got a counter when playing (S)VCD's. This was actually easy. Just set PBC to "no" in setup. I don't know what PBC (Play Back Control???) does exactly, but disabling it gives me a counter.

So most questions are answered for me now. I'm still on the lookout for a way of avoiding going into setup every time I wan't to play a SVCD. If you know a way, please share it here. Maybe somebody can explain to me what PBC does too.
