I copied a data DVD on Nero, which for some reason burnt the disc at 12x...when the disc only supports 8x.

I looked through the copied DVD, and everything seemed ok...but I just want to be sure that everything works and that its an exact copy. Is there a program that can help me compare the original to the copied disc to ensure its a good copy?

  2. just put in in the DVD of your PC, copy the entire DVD to your hard drive. If the copy succeeds, then the disc you burn is good, readable.
Since you say this is a data DVD, DVD player won't be able to play it.

I use DVDInfo Pro to look for read errors...

  4. I disagree that either of these methods would accurately find a possible individual flipped bit.

The old DOS utility, FC or filecompare, with the /B switch, will do a bit-for-bit binary comparison on each file to tell you if they are precisely identical.

This utility is still present in windows XP and other versions.

Copying tells you the files are readable, but not necessarily accurate.

Diskprobe utilities tell you if there are physical errors on the disk, but not necessarily file errors.

Generally speaking, the copy method will confirm general accuracy for most purposes. But if you want to be SURE, use FC.

Nero has a 'verify written data' checkbox on the burning page. Click it, and Nero, after completed burning, will read the disc bit-for-bit and compare against the version on your HDD. I believe this option shows up for all data discs (DVD-Rom or cd-rom) and DVD-Video.

Thanks guys. I ended up using FileCompare and it looks like the copied DVD is perfectly fine.

I don't think the checkbox where it says to verify after burning in Nero was even there, because I always check it when its there. Probably because I was copying a DVD, and not burning something originally on my PC.

That's quite possible. In general, you get waaay more reliable burns if you copy the disc to your hard drive first, and then burn - vs. on-the-fly. You will also then get the option to 'verify' the disc.
