  1. Hi. I used DJRumpy's guide to fix PAL to MTSC using this page. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221928&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

And it worked great and I can now watch PAL movies on my dvd player. (I live in Japan). But the video seems to be squeezed from the sides and the characters look long and tall. I've tried playing around with the settings with the IFOedit but I just can't get the video to play at 16:9 letterbox and play looking normal. Is there a way to fix this or this is what I get unless I have to re-encode the video file to NTSC format? Thank you in advance.

It could be a number of things. First, the patch method isn't a conversion. It is an attempt to foll a player designed solely for one format to play another. If it works, there is no way to guarantee the outcome will be what you want. If this is the case, then your choices become simple - buy a multi-format capable player or convert your PAL material properly.

It could also be the settings on your player. Check the settings for how it is set to handle 16:9 material. If it is set to output 16:9 to a 4:3 TV then you will get stretching. If your TV is 4:3, make sure the output is set to letterbox.

  3. It could be just a limitation of the player. I have a Sampo DVE-631cf. It's a remarkable player, except when it gets a PAL disc with anamorphic video, it will not squeeze it to display as letterbox, no matter what the settings. Bummer.
