  1. A friend had to reformat an older computer that I helped set up last year. He successfully reformated and loaded windows 98 but he can't get better than 16bits for graphics and the desktop size is so small that all his windows are too large to see. When I was there I managed to upgrade the graphics card and it worked fine but now I am trying to help by phone and I can't really remember what I did.

The problem he is having right now is that in trying to go through the set up for his internet connection he can't get to the entire window because it is huge. We need a way to make that window move up and down even though we can't "grab" it with the mouse. Isn't there a keyboard way to make window move up and down and left and right?

Also how DO I tell him to upgrade his graphics drivers? In device manager it just shows a generic driver. How does he figure out what graphics card he has? As I said I did it last year when I was there but I can't remember without being there to just try things.

    Thanks

You can try a freeware program like SIW to see what's on the system. I think it works with W98. I don't like the way the website works, but the program is very good.

It should ID the video card. The alternative is to open up the computer and read the info off the card. W98 really sucks with it's built-in drivers. You need to figure out the card and download the proper drivers.

I'm not sure how to scroll around a large screen with W98. Maybe someone here knows.

  3. Well I found the driver I need by putting the name of the computer into google. I'm still curious about moving windows with the arrow keys. I remember doing it before.

If you can see the Taskbar (and the button of the program that has been 'super sized'), you should be able to right-click the button of the program and select the Move option ... this will enable the program window to be moved with the cursor keys (at least it does on a Win2k box, and should on a Win98 box IIRC).

Try ALT-Spacebar, then M, then use your arrow keys to move the window... Then Enter when you're done moving it.

This is the same as clicking the top-left icon in a window to bring down the menu, then clicking Move... even if there isn't an icon up there (like in Display Properties)...
