  1. Hi all - I currently have a Canon SD300 and I use it to record a lot of video. I'd like to transfer some of this video over to a DVD. I'm quite familiar with encoding video and transferring to DVD, but for whatever reason, even though I can view the video just fine in windows media player, I can't seem to open or convert it with any other package (tmpgenc, premiere, etc.) I've contacted Canon, but they are of no help, as their tech support doesn't seem to understand any of my questions. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

what is the video container? avi,mp4,mov
    what is the video codec?

for mp4,mov you can convert to avi with https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=MP4Cam2AVI and then to dvd.

  3. The Canon generates AVI's, and while I do know what a codec is, I don't know how to check to see what codec is being used on that file. What tool(s) can I use to determine the codec? Thanks!

The other Canon "still" digital cameras use a MJPEG codec in a AVI wrapper. Other brands also use a MJPEG codec but sometimes in a Quicktime wrapper.

PS: On my system I can open and edit these Canon files in the following editors. I'm not sure of the source of the codec.

Windows Movie Maker 2 -> plays and edits, seems to only save as WMV
ULead Video Studio 8 -> can edit and save to MPeg1, Mpeg2, Uncompessed AVI, WMV, DV
Pinnacle Studio 8 -> can edit and save to MPeg1, Mpeg2, MJPEG PICVideo, DV
Virtualdub -> plays, haven't gone further
TMPGEnc -> plays, works for MPeg1 out so far

    It would not open in
    Nerovision 3

PS: Also opens, edits and exports in Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere on another machine.

Looked up the specs and it says - Movies: AVI (Image data: Motion JPEG; Audio data: WAVE (monaural)).

Rad Video Tools might be able to convert it to an AVI that TMPGEnc will accept.
