Are there any such tools that can identify what protection systems are on commercial DVD's?

What do you want to know ?
What details are you after ?

DVD Decrypter tells you if there is CSS present, and also if if ArCoss is possibly present (that is to say, it doesn't state that it is present, just that there are possible structural anomalies that it will fix)

Not knowing exactly what you need to know means it's hard to give a better answer.

I am pritty disgusted with the protection programs on the latest movies. Whatever the protection is? The only thing that has worked for me is download to DVD with MagicDVDRipper, clean up the VOB files with Vob Blanker and compress with NeroRecode (Copy entire DVD to DVD). The result is almost a perfect clone. DVDDecrypter and DVD Shrink 3.2 do not work for me. I have tried the settings recomended by cynthia and the Doom9 Forum. All of my other software programs have become trash. They include the following: PowerDVDCopy, TPGEncDVD, DVDPlatinum, Cpyt to DVD, 1ClickDVD and Magic DVD Copier. I have either AnyDVD or DVD43 running in the background. The burn directly from DVD to DVD looks like it is going fine. They don't get hung up. But when I try to play the main movie I get "Dirty Disk" on my stand alone. This never used to happen until this past month. It happened with Guess who and Upside of Anger. The point is I would like to identify the culprit, the name of the protection. I would still like to bun directly from DVD to DVD whenever possible and not trash all of the above prgrams.

You can try A-Ray scanner, it seems to detect some DVD protection stuff (sector scan), but it was mostly aimed at game cd's. Also don't forget to try DVDFab Decrypter for ripping.

You can get it here at the authors page:

Thank you for the feed back. I have tried DVDFabDecrypter and have gotten pixelation on playback on my standalone DVD player. I have tried changing media but to no avail. There must be something I am doing wrong. I tried the simple version of it and also got pixelation. I don't recall anyone else complaining about it. I might try it again.

dvdfabdecrypter simply copies files, so I don't see how it could be the cause of your problem.

It really sounds like you need to format your machine nd start again, this time only putting on what you really need. With so many problems from so many different programs, it seems your machine is in a sick and sorry state, and you are just making life hard for yourself by not fixing it.

I use most of the programs you mention, and have not yet had a disk that could not be backed up simply and easily.

Get the underlying problem fixed first, and I suspect everything else will fall into place.

Do you get pixelation when you playback the DVD's on your computer? If you don't see any pixelation on your computer and you do with the same disk on your home DVD player then its possible your home DVD player sucks. Have you also tried playing your burns on someone elses DVD player? Your media may suck or be incompatible...there are tons of drive/player/media compatibility charts here on this site for you to check. Looking at your system details it seems you have some decent hardware so I would look towards the DVD media being crappy or incompatible.

I had a successful burn using using DVDFab. I used it to rip Guess Who to the hard drive. I then used VobBlanker to filter it. Then I used DVD Shrink to compress and burn to DVD. I previously had used Magic DVD Ripper to rip to the hard drive and NeroDecode to compress and burn to DVD. No pixelation.

That being said I used some of Gunsligger's suggestion and backed myself up. I used 1Click Dvd with DVD43 operating in the back ground and succesully burned "Guess Who" directly to DVD without burning to the hard drive.

I then checked the burned DVDR's that I had made with Upside of Anger. I put them in thre different standaloned DVD players I have. One is the Toshiba RD- XS32 with a hard drive. The Toshba said "This disk is damaged or may requiere cleaning. The Panasonic DMR-E55 said "This disk is incompatible". The third player, an RCA DCR-350 played intermitent sound. I then played all three of the "bad" burned disk of "Guess Who on the computer's ROM. It only played back one scene of the entire movie. All three were burned with 1 ClickDVD or Magic DVD Ripper.

I have made a succesful burn of Upside of Anger using Magic DVD Ripper, Vob Blanker and NeroRecode.

The reason I started ripping to the hard drive was to be able to copy an entire DVD to DVDR without the ususal loss of picture quality that you would get with 1ClickDVD. I have been successful in this endevor.

I think there may have been a problem with DVD43 at the time I was burning Upside of Anger. I think if it stayed yellow. There is a process that must be followed when that happens. Possible, you have to turn it off and then reinsert the DVD and turn it back on. If I remember it stayed yellow. I thought Any DVD had caused that to happen. Possible conflict between the two?

At any rate like several have posted, I don't think it was because there is some new form of protection.
