    I don't know how new this tool is. I just discovered it, and it is not listed in the tools list on this site.
    It is called DeviceInfo.exe
    It is available for free download from the Pioneer website at:
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/article/0,,2076_4273_128163990,00.html
    It is down the page, next-to-last table, labeled the "Utilities" table. In the column that has the header "Model Number" it says "All Writers".
    This program will reveal the firmware level and general drive data about *all* the drives on your system. Not just the Pioneer ones.

    Speaking of sounds - On my computer it makes a high-pitched beep. I think it uses the onboard speaker instead of the external ones.
