  1. hi,

i know that an avi file is created from a DVD. But when you want to put an avi file on DVD, you need to convert it to dvd mpeg2 first.......does this process of changing it back onto dvd cause more quality loss?

ie. converting avi to vcd....u can tell there is loss in quality but i'm just wondering about avi to dvd mpeg2...

MPEG2 is a lossy form of compression, so each time that you use it you will lose some information in the video and therefore the quality will start to suffer.
Tools used: ScenalyzerLive 4.0, Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, Adobe After Effects 7.0 Professional, Adobe Encore DVD 2.0, IFOedit 0.96, DVD-lab PRO 1.53, Adobe Audition 2.0

If you do it properly, and provided your source is decent enough, you should be able to convert back to DVD with little to no quality loss.

Tricks of the trade include using either Quarter D1, Half D1 or Full D1 depending on your source, and then using CQ or 2-Pass VBR, and AVISynth or virtualdub filters.
    If in doubt, Google it.

As said MPEG2 is lossy so you will always loose quality. Whether or not you can detect the loss (jimmalenko's point) is a different matter.

Not all avi's are created from DVD's.
