  1. I have a question regarding converting AVIs to MPEG-2 for playback on a DVD player. I tried using mpeg2enc encoder which worked, but my Sony DVD player does not recognize the AC3 audio (the audio is there, but the Dolby "double D" does not illuminate). The mpeg2enc encoder also takes a lot longer, usually 20 hours or so for one AVI, whereas the ffmpeg only takes eight. This is with a 450MHz G4.

I used the "Set 3:2" option when I used mpeg2enc which retained the widescreen aspect of the videos I converted. When I used the ffmpeg converter, I lose the widescreen and the picture fills up the entire TV screen.

Can I use the "Autosize" option under the Video options to set the 3:2 like mpeg2enc, or is there something I am missing?

  2. "Set 3:2" has nothing to do with image aspect ratio, as it is a framerate pulldown option. When encoding with ffmpeg engine, you should enable "Decode with Quicktime" if you want to benefit from its auto-letterboxing feature. If you don't enable "Decode with Quicktime" you can use the manual letterbox in the Filters tab to add black bars (don't forget to subtract the same amount of pixels you're adding from the image size so as the total doesn't vary).
