  1. Newb as can be when it comes to video, pardon the naivete.

OK, Im trying to join several avi files for a future DVD encode and burn. They AFAIK have the same resolution, data rate, framerate etc. But I keep stumbling into the same error with VirtualDub, it says "Cannot append segment, video streams have different sampling rates (23.97600 vs. 23.97600)". Thats not a typo, it says its the same sampling rate but Im getting the error anyway. How do I get around this? Appreciate any help.

  2. Looks odd.

Probably not a good practice, but I've never had any trouble doing it with VirtualDubMod. You'll get the same or similar error but just click "No" and continue to append the segments.

Otherwise, you should be able to encode them individually and then join the resulting mpeg with TMpgEnc under Mpeg Tools to ensure compatibility.

Do an All Forums search on "different sampling rates" and you'll find 45 possibly similar threads - including https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1316049#1316049 :

This fixed the problem but the file size was significantly larger. I will try setting both audio and video to Direct stream copy and see what happens.

    thanks again
    Well that explains it then!

If the audio sampling rates are different (or it is VBR MP3), then follow the instructions about converting each avi to uncompressed audio.

Then, when you join them, you can re-encode the audio to Mp3 (if that is what you want) by using full processing mode for the audio in virtualdub.

It's possibly because of VBR MP3 audio. So use any virtualdub to extract the audio to PCM - guide here - (or alternatively recompress to CBR MP3,) and add that stream back into your AVIs using virtualdubmod, and then try joining them. Either that or just leave the AVIs as-is, and convert each one to DVD_compliant MPEG seperately, and let your authoring software join them. There's no need to join the AVIs prior to encoding
    If in doubt, Google it.

You'd be amazed by how many peeople think that this must be done before encoding to DVD. It happens all the time

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm might be worth a read. It gives you a lot of pointers in regards to choosing the correct bitrates and frame sizes and I daresay you'll find it pretty helpful if using TMPGEnc.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. Oh man thats gonna be a huge help (especially the bitrate stuff, boy was I lost there). Really appreciate it.

I'll undoubtedly get confused and come back with more questions in no time.
