That would give you a bitrate of approx 1676, which at full D1 or half D1 would look awful. If you must use one disc then I would encode at VCD specs -

    PAL
    Video:
    1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1
    352 x 288 pixels
    25 frames/second
    Audio:
    44100 Hz
    224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

    NTSC/NTSC Film
    Video:
    1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1
    352 x 240 pixels
    29,97 frames/second
    23,976 frames/second NTSC Film
    Audio:
    44100 Hz
    224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

Have a look in the guide section, there's loads of AVI-VCD guides. If you go along this route use TDA to author/make menu's, it's very easy.

  4. use gui4ffmpeg on the AVI's to create mpeg2 files for the dvd, then...

use a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author to make the DVD and allow the outputed files to go over the size limit of a DVD5, then create the DVD folders...

Then use DVDshrink to re-size the output files so they may fit on a DVD5....

Have you looked for / tried any programs yet ?

Have you looked for / found any guides ?

We shouldn't have to do the searching for you

If one-click wonders are what you're after, I'd try the free version of DivxToDVD. Follow the download link in the tools section, and look for the link to the old freeware version on VSO's website.

Or if you want to get your hands dirty, pony up using http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm .

As steveryan points out, there's pretty much no way in hell you're gonna retain any sort of quality if you try to fit 5 hrs 20 min onto a DVD-5 without reducing your frame size somewhat. You might consider putting 2 AVIs on each DVD, and then you could use a bitrate of around 3600, which would be plenty for Half D1 (352 x 480/576).
    If in doubt, Google it.

  7. 5h20min wont look that good, just to let ya know.....your probably gonna get a fair amount of blockiness in your output........not tryin to knock ya for doing it or anything, just forewarning you......it will look something slightly better than vcd, but DEFINATELY not up to commercial dvd standards.

    No.

VCD is less than half the resolution that VHS was, and it totally lacks in interlace.

i've never tried to make a vcd and i never want to..if you are concerned at all with quality you will either burn it to a DL or split it up.

    VCD's come in 2 flavors:
    1) Really blocky
    2) Really blurry

Running some filters over the video can improve the result. Even hand held home video can be made to work at 1150CBR VCD standards.

Each solution has its pro's and con's.

  18. Ok don't worry guys.. LOL..
i made the dvd and it doesn't really look bad.. it is like a vhs quality.. so i am happy with the out come..
    this is what i did..
    1. using TMPGnc i converted them to vcd quality mpg
    2. Using TDA made the dvd folder and the total amount was 3.8 GB
    3. and then using nero burned the dvd files to disc..
and it is perfect for me..

And that's all that matters. As you can tell from the various responses everyone has a different opinion what is good or bad in terms of quality. People still like to post questions that start off with, "What is a good..." or "What is the best...", and it invariably starts a debate.
