  1. I captured from VHS to my computer with my new PVR 150 PCI card in MPEG format. Then I used TMPGEnc to Demultiplex so I could use Goldwave to remove hiss and make the mono sound 2 channel. I love Goldwave and I don't remember having a problem with it before, but I loaded this 2 hour and 20 minute mp2 and tried to use the Hiss Removal filter, it will do between 10 and 20 percent before it freezes my machine and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. I watched the resource usage as I tried it again, and the CPU usage jumps up to 100% and stays there while this tries to use the filter.

I need to know either how to fix this problem or I need another program that can do the hiss removal and possibly make the mono sound stereo.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or recommendations.

The mp2 file itself might be corrupted. Could also be DirectX, a drive error - tons of things. Convert the Mp2 to WAV with BeSweet and try to edit the WAV with GoldWave.

  3. what kind of specs does your computer have?

  4. It still happened after converting it to WAV. It happens at 17%. I believe it happens at that same point everytime which would make me believe it is a problem in the audio. But I would have thought converting it would get rid of the problem. Also, I tested doing an audio filter on an mp3 song I had and the CPU usage was at 100% while it was doing that song also, but it didn't freeze up. My guess would be because it was only a 3 minute song compared to 2 1/2 hours.

My specs: AMD Athlon 1.73 GHz, 512MB Ram, Win XP Pro Service Pack 2, a 40GB hard drive (operating system) and an 80GB hard drive (audio/video files).

You might have a screwed up source file - it happens quite a bit on TV captures. You can try to demux with an app like ProjectX, which will fix the errors in your file and maintain sync.

  6. It didn't work after that either. Are there any other programs I can try that do this?

  7. I tried trial version of Adobe Audition and it actually gave me a blue screen of death, dumping physical memory.

  8. I transferred the file to my sisters laptop which has a processor that is .2 GHz slower than mine, with the same amount of RAM I believe, and I was able to use Goldwave to filter the hiss. But if anyone can think of anything I can check or do to make it work on my computer I'd appreciate it. It would save about 30 minutes of transfer time.
