This is my first attempt at a file of this size, and it's encoding (to vcd) soooooooo slowly, and getting slower.
I used the default TMPGEnc settings. The first 20% encoded within an hour, and now its been 5 hours for the next 8%
Any tips? Normal? I'm using an Athalon 1.4Ghz processor.

Not normal. I have a Tbird 1.2Ghz and find that TMPGenc encodes the standard VCD template at ~2.5x the source runtime (for DVD rips).
Is the preview still being displayed? Are you running any programs in the background? Are you sure the DivX isn't corrupt (bad DivX can cause strange problems)? Is this the first time this has happened or does it happen for all encodes? etc. etc. -
On my 1.2Ghz Athlon system, it takes also 2.5 to 3x time to encode from avi to SVCD.But only after installing the latest 4in1 drivers and BIOS updates for my MoBo (ASUS A7V133).Mybe that's you're problem.Or did get get enough RAM?Mybe you're machine is busy with swapping!? (slow down seems to indicate that). On my PV, other program don't really affect the encoding.I ran an audio editor, game word processor and media palyer the same time without degrading. But I got lots of RAM 1Gbyte)

I posted this in the newbie section after posting the one you replied to:
TMPGEnc would not load the audio part of my .avi file, so I tried using virtualdub to convert to .wav. I did everything as per the guide, but got a message referring to the source being incompatible. I tried again, NOT changing to full processing mode this time, and the file was saved. TMPGEnc loaded this file ok, and conversion started ok, but is now 6 hours in and moving REALLY slowly.
Looking at the properties of the original .avi file, the audio format is 'unknown format'. Is this causing my time troubles? Am I missing something that will recognise the audio format?
The .avi plays (with audio) no problems at all, as do sample conversions.
I still see the preview, but it only moves forward about once a minute (max).
In virtualdub's .avi information, it sez the audio compression is 'unknown (tag0055)'
No programs are running in the background, I only downloaded the DivX yesterday, so I don't think it would be corrupt.
Could encoding to PAL from an NTSC source be the problem? -

What do you mean by swapping? I have 384mb sdRam. I can't run anything to any effect while the conversion is happening. Slowdown only starts after about 20%.
Using NTSC template doesn't help.
PLEASE!!! Can someone help me?! -
If you are using win2k or WinXP open the task manager and look if tmpgenc is using the cpu for 100%. Look and see, if you are reaching the end of physical memory,i.e virtual memory is > 384 MB. On my machine, while enconding more than 500 MB RAM is used!Too much virtual memory leads to swapping (i.e. memory on hard disc)
