I have several computers networked with Ethernet. I want to be able to access data on other computers but I want a password box to pop up first. I thought I saw how to do this once when I didn't want to do it but now that I want to I can't see how to set it up.

Thanks Baldrick. Wow they don't make it easy. The people who design this stuff have never heard of K.I.S.S (Keep it simple, stupid).
How can they expect all of their users to set up their security settings accurately when it is so ridiculously non - intuitive? What percentage of people are going to work throught that page and get everything right?
I just want to have access to the files on my computer and when someone else tries to access those files I want a password box to pop up. Likewise if I try to access files on another computer a password box should pop up.
I have never understood Windows Networking. You set up accounts for people but they can use the computer by just setting up a new account. Where is the sense in that? -
If you have NTFS, put the files you want to share into a share folder, then set NTFS persmissions on that folder so only those you specify can access it.
You need to turn off simple sharing to accomplish this.TANSTAAFL -
Thanks both of you. I'll look at it fresh with your information. I get frustrated with things sometimes and start grumbling to any one who will listen.
