I'd like to convert a .mpg to .wmv Googling hasn't helped (I found the Windows Media Encoder, but it apparently won't handle MPEG2 files), and searching here brought up a bunch of irrelevant links

What is the easiest way to do this?

I import the .mpg into WMM and drag it to the storyline. I then choose File, Save Movie File. For Movie Location, I tell it "My Computer". It asks for a file name and location. It then estimates that, at "Best quality", I'll need 1.56MB to get a 160X120 38Kb/s file, which seems completely wrong... the source file is 200MB from a ReplayTV. If I choose Next anyway, it tells me:

"Windows Movie maker cannot save the movie to the specified location. Verify that the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still availble, and that there is enough free disk space available, and then try again."

Of course, there is more than enough disk space, the source file is still there, and I've tried a few different saving locations on different disks, all of which otherwise work just fine. The Help doesn't address any of this at all.

I seem to recall WMM having issues with MPEG-2.

Personally I'd convert it to DV-AVI using VirtualDub and the Panasonic DV codec, and then open that in WMM.
    If in doubt, Google it.
