  1. Hi all,

I have looked and tried converting an Avi file to be mpeg using TMPGEnc and gui4ffmpeg.

I have a lots f Dvix and Xvid files with avi extension and I want to convert them to be run on DVD player with the surround sound option. When I converted some of the movies they converted as stereo sound not the surround even I chose the 6 channel in gui4ffmpeg?

Is there any tool that rips the audio to be running as 5.1 channels?

Is all avi files (Dvix or Xvid) can get a surround sound from them ?

    Thanks in advance

If the source doesn't have 5.1 audio you cant get true 5.1 audio. You can make a virtual 5.1, read https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=270905

If the avi's in question (typically a xvid with AC3 5.1 audio) have 5.1 audio tracks then yes.....but you'll need a DVD player (home cinema), pc (with 5 speakers and sub) or external audio decoder (+speakers and sub) to play them anyway (or they'll just be downsampled to stereo)...but if you have any of these (except maybe a pc) then a simple stereo mp2 or ac3 audio track will be converted to Dolby Pro I or II to give a surround effect anyway.....(at least all mine do from any stereo source).

By the way Dolby Pro II is better at this upsampling than DP I.

I'm new to converting to DVD with all the flexibilities. I used to be a master in converting to VCD and SVCD and I can help you guys in this field Now I want to understand and mastering the DVD creation and converting so I need your help

There is no way to get 'virtual 5.1' that sounds as good as correctly mixed and encoded surround sound. The effort required to get something average really isn't worth it. If you have an A/V amp that supports Dolby Prologic II then just encode as 2 channel AC3 and let the amp do the work. It will produce a better mix than you can.
