Explorer.exe problem

I'm having this problem with explorer.exe, the app that controls much of windows

explorer.exe, the windows explorer has somehow been reassigned to a linux app I use - explore2fs. Now whenever I or windows tries to run explorer.exe (which gives you the start menu and stuff) it brings up explore2fs. There's no way to run explorer. I tried deleting explore2fs but that didn't work. Any ideas?


Also now I notice that I cannot open any other apps other than firefox, all of them give me errors saying "cannot find C:\program files\name\app.exe" even if I go and click on the executable manually.

how is it assigned to a linux app? were you using cygwin or nx or something??

you might try an XP repair install.

did you check your hard drive for problems? strange that it can't find those files...

It is linked to a .exe windows application called explorer2fs, which allows you to access linux partitions or images from within windows (such as ext2, ext3, or reiserfs). It is a windows application. I was able to resolve the problem (luckily) by booting into safe mode and accessing system restore.

It will open ext2 and ext3 images or partitions, but not reiserfs - if you need to open that ask me and I'll link a different app. If you'd like to talk linux more please let me know!!!

Thanks for the link. I'll try it. I never really had the oppurtunity to use reiserfs, usually I use ext2 or ext3. I hear lots of good things about reiserfs, how is it anyway?

I generally use ext3. I made the mistake of installing ext2 once - I would recommend never doing that. My system crashed a couple times and it took forever to recover it. Ext3 and reiserfs use a journeling fs which makes it a lot easier to recover from crashes. I've used both ext3 and reiserfs, from what I've found they're pretty similar. What distro do you use?

Ubuntu I tried recently.
I like Debian.
I started using Linux with SLAX and Knoppix Live CDs.

Me too!!! I started with both of those, went to a Topological Linux install (Slackware installed to an image on your NTFS partition that you can boot to), went to Slackware 10 and then 10.1, then went to Mepis and that's where I'm at now. Slackware is good to teach you how to do stuff manually on linux, but I really like Debian for its ease of use and the great tool apt-get!
