Not at all...I'm familiar with different filetypes and know you can't open, alter, then save jpegs without some loss.
I've always saved in bmp or tif.
PSP can't handle 48 bit so I use PS although PSP is much easier for basic jobs at 24 bits.

PNG is a good lossless format to save in, and it's fairly small too. Similar to LZW compressed TIFF except more compatible (seems a lot of software does not like LZW TIFF for some odd reason).
