    Hi everyone!

ive been doing some tests with Autogk and avi.NET to determine which one is the best to use with divx6 codec.

after a few backups i realised that avi.NET was 2 times faster encoding than Autogk, on my last test i encoded a couple of Red DWARF episodes from a dvd i own.

original size source was 1 gig
    divx final size 450 megs
    resolution 640x480
    1 audio track mp3 128 cbr

i used both settings with the 2 programs and it took them the following times to finish the encoding:

    Autogk- 1h59m
    avi.net-1h3m

i found out that this 2 tools use the(almost) same tools/method to encode, so why the time difference?

its a wild guess but does Autogk takes longer because it doesnt use the"balanced" mode and uses one of the other modes to encode to divx? if it doesnt why the time difference?

i also tried backing up xmen i have ondvd and the time differences were even bigger then

    i used Autogk 2.12b and 2.13b

    im using avi.NET v1.0
I love it when a plan comes together!

I would say that the DivX settings must be different. Are they both doing 2 passes? You might want to consider using XviD instead anyway.

    AutoGK uses VirtualDubMod to encode.
    avi.NET uses AVS2AVI to encode.

    AVS2AVI is faster.

Maybe slightly faster, but no where near twice as fast.

I have found avi.net to be almost twice as fast as well. On my Model-T a conversion on AutoGK at default settings takes about 18 hours and on avi.net it takes about 8. If I change the audio output setting on AutoGK to MP3, that drops to 10-12 hours, still much longer than AutoGK.

I would be interested if the guys who compare videos side-by-side to give their opinions on any quality differences.

yep i have done a few backups using both tools with same settings and avi.net is twice as fast as Autogk. both are great tools. i was just curious because of the encoding times.

i was thinking that Autogk was slower because the divx settings were set to "extreme" and avi.net settings were set to"balanced mode"

yes they both do 2 passes, xvid is free but i got used to divx and ive come across posts in webforums going on about standalones playing divx and not xvid.

like i said i compared these 2 tools and after 5 dvd backups i have not found any quality differences.(at least to me)

i also found out that avi.net produces a final aspect ratio closer to the dvd source than Autogk(even with itu resizing selected in hidden options)

Congratulations to both tools authors, but it looks to me avi.net has the edge

  7. I have a cowon media player that I got for xmas it takes 488 x272 divx file I used avi net last night to convert a 2 hr and 15 min movie of island staring Ewen mcgregor.. It was the first time I ever used avi. net it took 7 hrs and 50 mins is that normal? and it converted the VOB to 640 x 272 can I change the width in the setting to accomadte the media player 488 x272? and will changing the width cut down on encoding time?

Less pixels = less encoding time.
640x272 would make it 2.35:1 though, so 488x272 would give you the wrong AR, unless your player supports PAR resizing, but then if the screen is actually 488x272, that wouldn't help anyway since it can't stretch horizontally.

Never used that app, but I would imagine that you can change the output resolution somehow.

Telling us the encoding time without your CPU and SPEED is pointless. Your AVI can be resized to whatever you want, read the avi.NET guide on the web site.

  10. avi.net is certainly way faster on my AMD 64 3400+ with 512mb DDR RAM on WinXP home machine. AutoGK is painfully slow and eats up loads of system resources.

One thing I am wondering though, when I have divx codec 6.1 installed, why the output of file is avi and not divx container!!

avisynth is 2 or more times faster than virtualdub when doing the same work. Therefore anything that uses avisynth as it's primary engine is going to have a major speed advantage from the get-go.

AutoGK uses AVISynth. VDub is just used for encoding. Resizing, etc. is all done via AVISynth.

If you don't have chapters, tags, menus, xsubs, etc. then there is really no point in using .divx for an extension.

I think DrDivX can encode to the DivX container. But so far, I've yet to see a standalone player supporting it.

all my divx sap i owned played the divx containner(samsung, philips, mitsai) for what i read on the net all divx certified players at the moment will play the divx format including multiple xsubs.

what they wont play is chapters and menus on a divx container but theres no tool at the moment that does them.

Yes avi.Net is the fastest tool at the moment on my pc even surpasses Autogk(no longer supporting divx unless you download the patched dll) and the brand new StaxRip(keep an eye on this 1)

I did. Staxrip caused a crash on my PIII 1 GHz that I use for all my encodes. No problems with AutoGK other than needing to modify the DivX 6.1 dll. I haven't played with avi.Net as of yet but will on recommendations from this board...

StaxRip's author does release updates very often and in some cases gives hotfixes to users for their specific problem.

Tried avi.net after upgrading to the 2.0 net framework but the program fails to open. I get an exception error. Looks like a no-go for this software as well...

more details on what kind of errorres youre getting would help, 2 similar aplications/using same freeware tools crashing on your pc, there might be something wrong with your pc.

Nope...all's fine with the comp. I can use AutoGK just fine except I got an error code -2 this morning with a video file it didn't like. I DLed the latest version of Staxrip to see if it would work but it tries to default to things I don't need to DL (like MKVToolnik) before it will even install! Then when you do get everything it wants, I can't set several parameters like file size and target file folder (I put the source video on one drive and the target file on another drive). It really needs a "start" button so it doesn't try to do things as soon as you load up a file. That happened too. And since there wasn't a crash this time, it never generated a log file. I had to turn it off by using "ctl alt delete". This might end up being a great piece of software but I'm reminded of an old Mad Magazine comic where a guy swallows a live hand grenade. After the room is shown with blood all over the walls, the reviewer says "it needs work"...

Have no problem with either avi.net or stax with my winxpsp2. Like to use avi.net for the speed when encoding full movies retaining original ac3 audio.
Backed up matrix series on one DVD-plays superbly with my philips dvp642 on my 29 inch CRT TV.

I'm doing TV series episodes, 1/2 hour to 175 Meg and 1 hour to 350 Meg DivX avi. You should be able to set these easily but the program wants to default to 700 Meg or 650 Meg or a percentage of original video size. That might be good for movies but it's bad for TV series episodes. Also, when I add a source video file, the program starts right away. What it should do is not do anything until you are sure your final file parameters are correct. As I said, it needs a "start" button. In a way I can see where the author is going with this. He's trying to make it as unlike AutoGK as possible so no one can say it's just a clone of that program, but he should take a serious look at it to see what has really led to it being the way that it is. It's not just bug fixes that are important. Usability is important as well...

I can't get that one to open either. I've heard it may be because I have not upgraded to SP2 but that seems to be a lame excuse as just about any commercial encoder and a lot of freeware ones work just fine. These 2 that use the .NET are the only ones giving me real grief at the moment...

Okay, I got Staxrip to work...sort of...it produced a file with audio and no video! Checking to see what it did wrong. I don't like the way it demuxes and transcodes the audio before all the parameters are set, then goes back to the video. Shouldn't it allow for both parameters to be set BEFORE it does anything? That would be more logocal. It's also one of these programs that tries to default to the same folder that the original file is in. I like to keep the mpegs in one folder and put the avis into a distinct other folder on another drive. Hmmm...have to keep working on it. One more try before I give up on it for now...

I'm going to leave well enough alone with this proggie for awhile. I redid the vid I wanted, made all my settings in DivX 6.1 but left everything else as it was under the old Xvid settings. This time it changed the file size from 175 Meg to 293 Meg! Well, that's acceptable but not what I wanted and after spending the last 12 hours straight playing with this, it's time to take a breather. I'll come back to it if AutoGK gives me headaches again...

I have been getting Staxrip to work okay but I have been wanting to try avi.net. It still won't run on my computer. Not much point in sending an email to the author as I have nothing special to tell or where the fault may lie. The latest 2 versions of Staxrip run just fine but I have to manually change file sizes with the slider everytime I want to produce a file of an exact size. After that, it runs fine. I'll try a reinstall of avi.net and see if that helps...

after you set up your custom size for your encode you need to press "enter" on your keyboard otherwise it will pre-define as size itself, i think that what its happening to you

When selecting a '.Custom Size ->>' you MUST, I repeat, MUST press RETURN (that's the ENTER key) after entering a value, if you don't the value will not be accepted! You'll notice the numbers you enter will be red, meaning not currently excepted, once enter/return is pressed the numbers will turn black indicating the value has been excepted and calculated. All is well.

Yes, I have done that. I reset it for 350 MB and let it go. After awhile, it resets itself and says to continue with 493 MB as the file size, so I have to use the slider to reset it to 350 MB. AutoGK I would just set to 350 MB Custom Size and hit the start button and come back in 3 hours and it's done. No extra fiddling at all...

    Hi.
    Never experienced that problem, strange!

Both avi.Net and StaxRip are great at converting dvds to divx.
I only use avi.Net now because its so damn fast with very good quality, if im encoding a dvd that will need subs (japanese etc) i will use StaxRip to convert the dvd to divx because it can creat xsubs from the subtitles on the dvd.
