When I encoded and burned a Divx5.0 video to VCD using Nero 6.3, I got a shimmering affect that moved across the screen as the figures moved across the screen. When I tried to encode the Divx5 video to VCD using TMPGEnc Plus, I got a blank screen and audio only. Also the same problem using a converter.
Do I need to convert the Divx5.0 video to a lower compression AVI file first and then go to VCD? If so, what is recommended, going to raw or basic AVI?
Ialso ran into the same problems described above when trying to do a VCD froma Avid MPEG 4 video.
Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

Nero is not a very good converter, IMO.
But, first thing I always do with a video is check it with AVIcodec or Gspot or similar to see what I am dealing with. If the audio and the video is out of spec, even for the average Divx, you will have problems converting it. Post the resulting screen from one of those programs here if you want. Blank out the video name, though.
Pal encoding, MP3 VBR audio, odd framesizes, odd audio or video bitrates are some of the problems you might see. Each one may require different methods and tools.
You also might try VCDeasy as it seems to be popular for conversions to VCD. -
I'll follow your suggestion as I had just downloaded Gspot.
After some experimentation, I found that I needed to convert the Divx5.0 video to another AVI format. I tried about 8 different codecs and got the best quality with Cinamatic codec and second best with Indeo 5.10. The only thing that showed up was some pinkish color in the face of the speakers. When I looked carefully at the Divx 5.0 playing, it did have some minor pinkish color in the face which was probably made worse when going to the lower quality encoding. I then did a short test run on encoding the Cinematic encoding to vcd through TMPGEnc and it was acceptable -- a lot better than what Nero had done. As I said, the quality of the Nero was good but the moving shimmering took away from the picture.
Except when I did it in Nero, I just so far have found no way to go from Divx 5.0 to VCD except by the method described above.
If I come up with anything further, I'll post it. I'm dealing with ballroom dancing instruction videos which don't have to be perfect as long as I can see things reasonably clear and doesn't cause my eyes to go wild.
Thanks for your suggestion.
