I recently ripped one chapter of my new sopranos dvd to test out the feasability and quality of XSVCD burning. I used DVDRIPPER following Sefy's guide to the T. I successfully ripped then converted using TMPGEnc. When I went to view the resulting MPEG file I was surprised to see tons of weird blocks of all kinds of colors.

Is this macrovision? When I ripped I was sure to have the "De-macrovision" option selected so I am unsure what heppened. Any help from the forums?

  2. hrm...did you try viewing the ripped vobs directly. perhaps the dvd was a especially well-encrypted DVD. weird, colored blocks sometimes indicated a wrong key was used to decrypt the vobs...

  3. I Agree with poopyhead, usually when you got colored blocks it means the VOB's were not decoded correctly. I suggest you rip them again using a diffrent ripper and try playing them first.

  4. also, on your ripping proggie, choose "search key every cell" rather than "search key every vob file"......they have have changed keys somewhere in the vobs...

  5. mkirk i never heard of a ripper called DVDRipper are you talking about SmartRipper .if you are ripping a dvd with DOD Speed Ripper or DeCSS(plus) they will not work with the new kinds of DVDs there were the grandfather of all DVD Rippers

Sorry guys... I meant "Smartripper" not DVDRipper. It's the one Sefy suggests in his guide. I will try again with suggestions above. Anyone have success with other rippers? I DID have to play the DVD first to unlock it so that didn't do the trick either.

So- scrambled, colored blocks is def'n macrovision and nothing I'M doing wrong, right?

**** ok- now this is just plain annoying ****
I am now using DVDDecrypter for DVD rip and then use DVD2AVI to save the .d2v file for encoding in TMPGenc. When I go to TMPGenc here I have the following settings:

MPEG-2 - Constant Quality (100) - basically it's my own XSVCD template which is optimized for quality (I'm hoping - don't know yet have yet to rip successfully!) I did put the YUV format to 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 and also have both the source and encode setting on "interlace".

When I get through the process TMPGEnc appears to have encoded the file properly (the preview and thumbnail look as they should as the frames are encoded) - however - when I finish the resulting MPG appears blank (I hear the audio). IS this macrovision. What's the deal?
