  2. OOOPs

I found itL DVD media inspector

but what determines the rating "good" in the dvdmedia section?

and is there some reasonable way to rate makers?

Trial and error mostly. Each person has a brand they swear by. For me it's Ritek (cheap and cheerful, and very reliable for me). Other people like to spend more money on Verbatim or TDK or Taiyo Yuden.

This forum has an entire section devoted to DVD media here: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27

  4. And to add to the confusion, what is "Good" media for one drive may be bad for a different make/model drive. Sometimes even the Firmware version can make a difference.

Do some tests is one way or if you know the make and model look to the left under DVD Writers and see what others had good luck with.

Or IOW quality media is less variable. But even brand name such as Fuji can be different media. made in japan or made in taiwan. Generally both work for me in a Pioneer drive and Pioneer DVD Recorder (Standalone).

    Cheers

In 10.4, running "drutil status" from a Terminal command line can display the Media ID; see these examples.

  9. Of copurse if you want to know the name of the manufactuer you will need a current database of codes and who is really responsible for them. On the PC there is an app called DVD Identifier which has a data base built in. Since I use a Mac, I can't run this app, but I was able to download their database a couple of years ago (it was a text file) and can consult it when needed. Unfortunately they changed their database format to something that I can't access, so very current disks (like almost all DL media) remain a mystery to me.
