  1. I will be getting a dual layer burner within the next couple of months and would like to know if the software that comes with the burners let you decide what goes on each layer when authoring, for example if I have two 3 gb video files, can I have the software burn one of the files to the first layer and then the second file to the second layer or does the first layer have to be completely filled before anything is burned to the second layer?

This is indeed the case - remember that this is the case for optical drive and media, there's no way to 'pad' up to the layer break that I've heard of . . .

The burning software figures it is smarter than you. It will decide. Besides, it's not like you can manually switch layers with your DVD player anyway, so what difference does it make?
That's like saying for a regular DVD, "I want the first file to be on the inside of the disk toward the hub, and the second one on the outside part of the disk. Or maybe I want it the other way."
