  6. what is the quality of it on a scale of 1-10? i'm just curious. if it looks kinda bad don't fret....when i first got mine going the quality was piss poor and ALOT of people on here said Mpeg1 vcd can look a little better than vhs but not as good as dvd. now my vcd's are just that. i didn't think it was possible. i am very pleased now and now that you know the basics it all goes from there and soon in time you'll be even more happy with the results.....

Looks like e.g. LSX and Xing gave a poor result, very blocky image and in fast scenes the artifacts were uncountable
now that I use TMPGenc for some time my dvdrips look MUCH better than VHS...
not to mention that I actually capture a dvd movie (analog -> digital) instead of ripping the .vob files and encode them (digital -> digital)... My experience with capturing is good!

  8. Well alucard2050, as far as my picture quality went, I would rate it about a 4 maybe, it didn't look as good as even a vhs. the picture would be semi-clear then it would get a little fuzzy at times. I was hoping there is something out there that I could do that might improve it, also how do I get rid of the , what I think is widescreen black lines on top and bottom. I don't like looking at those, but hey, thats just me personally. Can you remove them? and audio isn't that great, but I am just happy at the fact for right now that I actually did it!!! : )

  12. Sorry this site obviously doesn't see women very often ( too much testosterone flying around in here)... Remove those widescreen bars by selecting 4:3 in TMPGenc instead of 16:9.

  13. Alucard, how did you get to better than vhs quality and when you do how much (in time) can you fit on a cd? I've made some that I am pleased with using ATI AIW capture card, capturing in mpeg2, converting with tmpgenc, burning with Nero 5.5 (hate easy cd creator) but really wouldn't rate it that high. I would love to hear how you do it.
BTW I'm not talking about ripping dvds' so better than vhs would be a stretch anyway but I would like to get equal quality to my vhs source.
still playing and tweaking but definitely having fun!

  14. And make sure that when you select 4:3, you don't select the preserve aspect ratio option.

  15. Ok guys, I'm back....... ok, I want to take that same avi file the I did the vcd with and I want to make it into a xvcd. So now from what I have read , that should up the quality of the file, correct? And as far as the wide screen bars, is there anything else I need to change besides the 16:9 to 4:3 in TMPGEnc? I want full screen and I would like it to be at least a little better quality, and the audio could also use some work. So can you do anything with the audio as far as that file goes? By taking this same file, and encoding it to a xvcd, then that should give me a better picture, right? Also I need to re-encode this file in order to make it a xvcd, right? I am just trying to cover all basis here. and if there is anyone else out there that can tell me what not to check or change to make it better , I sure would appreciate it. Thanks guys! : )

  16. First of all, understand that you will NEVER surpass the quality of the avi source file. But here are some things that can make your xVCD better:

    1. Increase the bitrate (for both the audio and video).

    2. Increase the size of the picture. I've heard that 352x480 works pretty well, also 480x480 (SVCD resolution). Again, it makes no sence to go higher than the AVI source.

    3. To remove the black bars... Crop the picture a little. For a DVD source, I crop 50-60 pixels off the left and right. This causes the picture to be zoomed more (don't worry about resolution because the DVD's resolution is much greater than the xVCD you are creating) which reduces the black bars. If it is a matted widescreen (ie. not "enhanced for widescreen&quot, then you need to crop the top and bottom too.

    4. Also, if it is a captured source, try using a temporal smoother filter. This will improve the picture greatly, smoothing out some noise in the image. Don't go too high with it though.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
