Hey buddies, I need some advice with ripping two dvds. I am getting all kinds of sick read errors using dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, and dvd fab decrypter. After this I tried using different programs that would run in the background with these ripping programs like the free region, dvdidle, and dvd43. I still get read errors with decrypter, cyclic redundancy errors with dvd shrink, and dvdfab decrypter just closes because of errors. The dvds are practically brand new so there's no scratches or anything. I only have one dvd-rw drive so i can't try another one. any other ripping programs or techniques to try? thanks

dvds that won't rip: Hulk, Frida
    drive: nec 3540
    OS: Win XP

First use a DVD lens cleaner disk to make sure that dirt/dust is not obscurring the read. Install AnyDVD & run it in the background & use DVD Fab Decrypter to rip. In the last 30/60 days (since DVDFab began offering their ripper), I have not seen that combo fail unless:

    1. The laser is going belly up
    2. The disk is damaged & cannot be read
    3. A new ARCOSS is used (neither of your DVD's fall into this one.)

If you do the above & are still seeing these errors, we need to have you post the exact text of the error along with the specific profile of your machine. Without these, a crystal ball would be needed.

cyclic redundancy error usually implies a physical error, i.e. damaged/scratched/faulty disc. Even if the dics are new, thats not to say there cant be faulty.

However, the problem can be related to your dvd drive. Try ripping in another drive or PC, maybe a friends just to rule out that its your your dvd drive.

  4. If you have another DVD drive in your system try that. I have a Toshiba DVD reader that came with my PC that I bought in 2000 and I have an HP 200i DVD recorder that I bought when they were the latest thing. the HP 200i sucks at reading disks that have the slightest amount of scratches. The Toshiba drive will read nearly anything that the 200i can not.

One day when I buy a new computer I will definately bring this old Toshiba drive with me as I'm not impressed by the 200i as a scratched DVD reader. I will say that I've burned well over 200 DVDs using the HP 200i and only had one disk that failed the Verify round. If the disk is not scratched all that much the 200i can read it fine otherwise I use the Toshiba drive.

  5. Since you have tried all other techniques try the following which could work, if it is a focussing problem due to uneven thickness of the dusk.

    1) Put the DVD in a fridge to cool it down.

    2) Take it out, wipe away the condensed moisture on the reflecting side and pop it into your DVD+-R/RW.

    3) Start DVD Decrypter

    4) After DVD Decrypter has highlighted all the files, just highlight the one giving difficulty and rip.

    5) If you have problem with more than one file, then repeat the whole process of cooling and ripping as explained above one file at a time.

Please report your result with above method in this forum.

I ripped The Hulk with my Aopen 1648AAP reader no problem (DVD Decrypter). My guess is you need to buy a 2nd drive ($25 +/-) just for ripping only, its best not to stress your burner out by using it as a ripper anyways.

  7. I have been reading alot of posts regarding the NEC 3540 and problems ripping, you might RMA it or buy a DVD-ROM.
BTW...Take the DVD's to a friends house and try to rip on their PC.

ok i tried the anydvd-dvd fab decrypter combination with no luck. anydvd was able to read the disc and dvd-fab decrypter even started decrypting with no error messages. the problem is it was going good and then about halfway through the rip, it starts to rip slow as shit. it would seriously take like 5-6 days to finish. any comments on this?

jbfly03, seems to be a consensus here, buy a DVD-ROM drive for ripping.
