Just to be sure, I just checked 7 different types (brands) of DVDs. I can't find a single one a layer (aluminum or otherwise) above the plastic on top of the disk. CDs only have one plastic disk and the burning layers is on top of the disk. DVDs have all the important stuff sandwiched in between 2 plastic disks.

  3. Never had a problem with sticky labels. The only point is to center them accurately which I believe most people can't. It wasn't easy to make a centering jig for small hole labels. some facts,: dvd sensitive layer is placed between 2 plastic layers unlike cd that is on top and can be damaged or peeled off by glue. The label can be removed from dvd by water or someone said a bit of wd40 which I also tested and could be washed afterwards and still played with no problem. There is always a trade off, Beauty of label outweighs 30 or 40 cents that now and then something may go wrong and always they can be removed. For some physics scientific minded friends, added paper weight { accurately centered} creates flywheel effect (more inertia) hence more steady spin. I don't think expansion is an issue first of all its pressured between the 2 rings when disc is engaged also it spins and gets cooled also the centerifugal force effect is way more than the thermostat effect. After all what ever works best for you.

But you already stated the problem with that:

yeah, just spring $5-10 and get a cd-stomper-thing. works great.

i'm sure some players really do have issues with labels, but seriously, it wouldn't be such a big industry if it were a problem.

The Stomper device works well but their labels suck. Memorex labels are much better quality.
