Most of the DRM posts seem about not being able to use DRM. I have my own (legal) MP3 file which I would like to use as a ringtone on my Sony phone. The file will play OK but I can't use it as a ringtone without DRM.
Thanks
Alan

I don't know what's going on with your phone, but the MP3 format doesn't even have a place for DRM (not counting "enhanced" mp3Pro). All it has is a flag that specifies "copyrighted" or not, maybe that's what your phone is looking for--and any encoder can set or clear that flag, but you'd have to re-encode.

Many thanks for the prompt response but not sure I understand.
My Sony Ericson V800 which accepts MP3 returns the message "Can not
use this file as DRM protection key is missing."
The Sony FAQ also state that MP3 can be used as Ringtones provided thay are DRM porotected.
Cheers

Just checked through a handful of popular mp3 encoders...
Like I said, they have a [Copyrighted] checkbox. That's It! (That's one of the main reasons that places like iTunes, etc DON'T use mp3)
MP3 doesn't include what the industry expects from DRM technology.
It could be that they really are referring to mp3Pro. It could be that they encapsulate the mp3 inside some other kind of DRM wrapper. It could be that they only accept some proprietary, non-standard variant of MP3 that has some DRM code packed into the ID3 tags (cuz you can put other stuff in there like pix).
I dunno. Guess you're going to have to get a more in-depth answer from Sony.
