I'd like to have 320kbps MP3, the best you get out of a recording mp3 player, and Hi-SP Atrac (292kbps) used in MiniDiscs, compared. A quick googling didn't turn out anything very meaningful. Experiences? Studies?
And if there is indeed a mentionable difference, with what kinds of sources does it come up, and where is it simply irrelevant?

320 kbps MP3 (and any reasonable encoder) is transparent to uncompressed PCM. I'm pretty sure that Atrac at that bitrate is too so your limiting factor in quality is not the codec, but rather the electronics of your recording equipment.
