I just left the Philips website, and there was a listing for a firmware upgrade dated 7/21/2005. However, when I click on it, it tells me "Page cannot be found." Here's the link...

Maybe they're finally preparing to give us firmware updates again. That would be neat.

I spoke to customer support, and they said, "we do not recommend this upgrade at this time. That is why it is not available." They went on to say that "installing the upgrade would further damage the player." I tried asking when they might be able to "recommend" installing it, but they disconnected the chat session... Oh, well. Hopefully it won't be too much longer...

    My guess:
Probably a bad patch that damaged some players when installed. They usually say upgrade at your own risk but I don't think that would hold up if they admitted to putting up a bad firmware. The less they say the better for them so it probably explains why they are being evasive. Anyone's player that broke out of warranty could claim it happened with this patch and try for a new machine. Cheaper to say nothing.

    Not a good sign.

  7. I'm planning to buy a philips dvp 632 (europe) and was wondering what firmware actually does. Do they only change the subtitles or do they add more, like make it capable to play more formats....

I'm waiting for new firmware to make my DVP642 capable of playing the Nero Digital MP4 format. I'm no expert by any means when it comes to firmware, but it is my understanding that firmware which enhances the subtitles for Philips units are available (third-party), if that's what you're interested in.

  9. I've only seen comments about changing subtitles with firmware but what I can make out of your reply means that firmware can also make the dvd player more compatible with video and audio formats and isn't just for changing the subs?
