1. I had a few succesful trial conversions (trailers & such) using TMPGenc, but upon attempting to convert a larger .avi file, I found the conversion slowed down heaps. The estimated time to complete was up around 6 hours. Is this normal? I have a Athalon 1.4ghz processor, ata100 HDD, heaps o' ram etc.
2. I cannot change settings in TMPGenc. I opened the 'unlock.mcf' file using notepad, but did not know what to do next.
Cheers in advance

1) Yes that is normal my old tbird 800 was about 8-10 hours.
2) Dont open unlock.mcf in notepad, open in TMPG by using load at the bottom right. -
tmpgenc is just slow.. even with a fast processor.. especially if you are doing svcd and/or using filters.. i started frameserving to tmpgenc with virtual dub. tmpgencs resizer is slow(this would only matter if the source resolution is not equal to the destination mpegs) if you dont mind a bit of a quality hit , virtual dubs resizer (nearest neighbor setting) is pretty fast although quality takes a hit. but if you use the bilinear or bicubic (regular not precise) its a nice compromise of quality and speed. the precise bicubic/bilinear is slower than tmpgencs so no benifit in those
when you have the virtual dub resize filter running and frameserve to tmpgenc it automatically doesnt have to bother with its internal resizer.with my 375 mhz processor can use all the help it can get and since some of the source i deal with is crappy, i dont mind using the bicubic filter. if you have great source then go with the precise bicubic
anyways.. takes me about 6 hours for 50 mins source avi at bicubic setting and about 3.5- 4 hours with nearest neighbor setting. the fpu in my k6/2 sux...
are you converting to vcd or svcd? or running filters?

You can Half the encoding time by upgrading to an AMD XP cpu, if you are going to be doing alot of encoding, it is worth the $125-$175 price tag and chances are your MB will support it. Once you get at or more than 256mb of ram more memory will not make any noticable difference, and drive space not at all.
