  1. I have been encoding avi files from scripts found at http://dvdripping-guid.berlios.de/Divx-to-VCD_en.html for a number of years. Suddenly, I'm finding that none of my products are in good audio/visual sync and in many cases, don't work at all. I suspect that some of the commands on the script may be old and depecrated while the software it uses is being upgraded. (?)

Does anyone know of some good scripts that uses mencoder or mjpeg tools, transcode...I'm up for suggestions. I can't seem to get a single good result these days. I'll try any format, svcd, vcd, kvcd etc. Thanks.

Have you tried "tovid" ? It is a suite of shell scripts to make VCD, SVCD and DVD authoring easier. It converts arbitrary video formats (such as various avi) into (S)VCD/DVD-compliant mpeg. It purportedly can also help with menu creation and disc authoring (although I haven't tried out that feature of it yet). Some URLs for "tovid":
    http://tovid.sourceforge.net/
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/tovid/
    Developers/support Forum: http://www.createphpbb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=tovid

My limited experience is if one does not change the frame rate, then "tovid" does an ok job of keeping the audio/video synchronised. Its only if one changes between different frame rates (ie different NTSC and also PAL formats) that the audio can drift to be desync'd from the video by a second or so (after a 45-minute video clip).

I also like a tool which comes with "tovid" called "idvid". "idvid" is convenient for a quick summary of the format of a video file.

Another script based (I believe) tool I've been considering taking the time to iinstall and tryout is bitterbpp:

Another package (that I haven't tried out yet myself) is "Winki the ripper". To quote from their web site, it is a "program for video encoding. It is actually just a graphical frontend for GNOME written in python to command line tools like mencoder, mplayer, mkvtoolnix, oggenc and lsdvd." http://www.winki-the-ripper.de/

Referenced your desynchronised audio, did you consider stripping out the audio, adjusting it, and remuxing? "audacity" may help you if you are considering this approach:

  6. Audacity is an excellent tool as well, I haven't tried any of those other ones though
