DVD firmwares are generally created by the DVD chipset manufacturer and 'handed down' so to speak to OEMs and still further to name brand sellers/OEM parts assembler.
For example: I have two players that have the exact same ESS Vibrato II chipset. Both players have a feature or two unique to them that in turn makes their firmwares unique from one another. A firmware upgrade to allow the playback of Nero Digital 2.0 has been released. One manufacturer released a firmware update with it. The other one stated they would not be releasing any firmware updates, Nero Digital or otherwise. Maybe they had the original OEM create the firmware for them too, who knows.
Anyway, you will usually have to hope an individual player's name brand seller can and will update/upgrade the firmware or that they haven't significantly altered it from the 'main/base' firmware from the OEM. -
Thanks, so does this mean i must opem my dvd player and check the chipset and then search for a firmware upgrade ???

Better to check with the company branded on the front panel first and keep your fingers crossed.
