ongoing .sub file encoding dramas

hi,

im trying to encode avi file with .sub/idx. to dvd ffmgeg. I followed some of the instructions on previous post but to no avail. this is where im at with the drama.

import source format - avi file then selected dvd mpeg2enc
next, loaded the .sub file and the idx file into the ifo palette then clicked on vob sub (not sure what option to check burn idx or srt???)
finally, checked decode with mplayer

when i hit encode it says source filename error (remove spaces/special characters from file name) i tried this but then i couldnt see the subs in the preview!

what to do?

would appreciate some help here, as ive gotten a million sub`d films id like to watch.

.idx/.sub is only for playback, you can't encode it into a movie.
