  1. Right now I'm here I'm on a dialup connection. Does anyone know of a free app that will notify me of an incoming call while online, so I can recieve it and not miss it?
    Thanks!

For a lot of the computers I build, I use inexpensive modems with the Netodragon chipset. With the software installed, it sounds a phone ring and puts a window up on the screen that you have a call and asks if you want to answer it. You click yes and it holds your internet page open for five minutes while you take the call. Works very well.

A lot of modem setups that notify you of incoming calls require 'call waiting' which costs, but this works without it. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this modem, but the feature may be available with others. It seems to be a function of the modem chipset and the modem software. I use this one: http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=DFMIN92

Thanks a lot! From what I've read most other services like this require call waiting or call forwarding, both of which I don't have here. It would be great if this modem works without either of those!!! Is there any installation and setup required for this function or does it work automatically once you install the modem? I'll check and get more info about my current modem as well.

I've looked at those and they both seem to need the call waiting feature to work. Also I'd like to pay a one time fee rather than monthly.

It installs pretty much automatically once you put the included disc in. I have used several of these with good luck. They're cheap, buy a couple if one fails. Only failure I've had was from a phone line surge.

I installed the first one and didn't use all the software, the second one I did and I heard a phone ringing. Took me a second to realize it was the computer. You just click to accept the call, then pick up the receiver. I asked the party calling if they had got a busy signal, they said it was ringing normally. It gives you like five minutes before it loses the internet connection. If you can find a better quality modem with this feature, even better.
