Control media playing via http

hey, lookin around for somethign kinda specific, and not coming up with much.

heres what im looking for... i have my computer hooked to multiple TVs in the house via tv out. What i would like to be able to do is some how control what movies/music plays via a web browser on say a laptop in the living room.

now i ran into VideoLAN, but it doesnt seem to be exactly what im looking for. what i want is to be able to load up the control page on a web browser, and go through a list of movies/music/playlists(set as a home directory maybe) click that movie/music and it plays on the server machine thats links to the tv's.

Is there any software out there like this? mostly all i can find is "streaming" apps like this, but thats not what i want, i just want a control interface to be able to play and maybe even "control" the movies or music playing.

well, after another attempt at searching ive found some WMP plugins that enable you to control WMP via any web browser, shows some promise.

i do still wonder if there are standalone apps that can do this, not that i hate WMP, but i prefer not to use it
