what conversions ? AVI to MPEG, and/or MPEG to AVI ?

It really depends on your purpose for doing these conversions in the first place.

For example, if converting AVI to MPEG, are you doing this so you can ultimately convert to VCD/SVCD/DVD ?

Similarly, if converting MPEG to AVI, are you doing this solely because it takes up less space for a similar quality on a PC, or you've got a DivX-capable settop player ?

Obviously if you've got a capable settop, then you probably wouldn't do the first conversion anyway.

More info regarding the types of sources you have, and what you ultimately want to achieve will give us more of a chance to give you a definitive answer
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Well as for mpeg to avi i need it beacause i want to convert:
A)Mpeg VX - Camera format to divx and
    B)mpeg-2 from satelite receptions.

As for the avi-to mpeg i obviously want to in order to create a dvd.avi to vcd or svcd would be lossy and pointless!
