Hello I was wondering if these are now being made by Sony? I see nothing but good results for the GQ DVD-R 8x media. Could it be possible that GQ is using media id: SONY08D1 as fake? I bought a 50 pack about a year ago and it gave me nothing but coasters. Could it be possible GQ has someone else making their blanks?

GQ is a marketing brand and use many manufacturers as seen here

My last batch of +R 8x bought at Fry's are coded "LD S03"
These burn OK but often fail to load into one or more of my DVD players.

They were cheap ~6-14cents ea. so I use them to store HDTV ts files.

  3. I bought a 50 pack of GQ dvd-r, X8 for $2.50 with rebate back in March, 2005. It had this media code,

The reports are pretty accurate. The rebate check for $10 showed up today. The check says GQ Rebate, Lead Data International, 16030 Carmenita Road, Cerritos, CA 90703. Made me wonder if Lead Data is their parent and if the LD code is their own.

At a nickel a disk, they do have some uses. The problem areas seem to occur starting around 2/3's of the way out towards the outer rim.

  5. GQ (fry's media) is absolute mixed results. I've bought some that were SKC, Ltd media id, they burned fine, play in all of my dvd players - no problems. They were -R printables for $9.50/50pk so it was hard not to go back and buy more, so I did! After that first initial spindle, the remaining 3 spindles WOULD NOT BURN! I kept getting POWER CALIBRATION ERROR on my NEC 3500 (Maddog 16x). So I returned them, vowing NEVER to buy GQ media again...

Well, they put some +R (8x) non-printables on sale, for $4.75/25pk, I bought 1 pack.. brought 'em home they were SONY D01 media code, they burn at 16x on my NEC and I get near perfect PIF scans using Kprobe at 4x! I'm sorry I didn't buy more of those when they were on sale! I'm sure the next batch of "whatever" they have on sale will be a completely different media code and I'm sure have different results. GQ media for the most part is crap and should probably be avoided - IMHO.

  6. oh, one more thing... if you talk to the guys who work at fry's... most of them will tell you their GQ media stinks ... Most of them tell you to buy a "real brand" ... I thought that was funny.

GQ media isnt the best, hence its so cheap, sometimes u get lucky tho

The GQ code LD S03 are not that bad when you can get 50 pack for like 8 or 9 bucks at FRY"S. I end up with about 6 bad ones. I guess my burner does not like them to much. The video comes out good but no sound.
