  1. SHS,

Encoding the edited AVI file with the Hauppauge PVR-250 would be a great time saver, but I don't know of any way to get the AVI file into the PVR 250.

  2. Gisele, I think you are going to need a TBC. TimeBase Corrector.

Almost certainly the reason some tapes worked and others did not is because those were your best-condition (not necessarily best quality) tapes.

VHS tapes are highly variable, some may copy well, some may have synch issues, some may not copy at all. Different VCR (not necessarily newer or better) may well solve the problem on some tapes.

Most DV devices avoid the audio synch issue, other than that which needs a TBC to fix.

TBC built-in to VCR nearly useless, but better than nothing.

The process is multi-stage. Check quality at each stage. Direct-to-disk is NOT repeat NOT a good idea for VHS. On the software, ask your husband does he want to build a project with a Swiss Army Knife or specialized saw, utility knife, and file?

You seem willing to do some reading. This is good, because you have some to do. Keep at it, it will start to make more sense as some of the concepts come together to explain each other.

You have purchased a good quality hunk of hardware. However, IMO it is highly likely your first piece was perfectly adequate, what you needed then and probably still need is another $200.00 for a TBC.

Never mind I see Barnabas device dosen't have Video output on his Canopus ADVC-55 like the big-brother ADVC100, 110, 300 or TwinPact100 unit which dose have Video output.

  5. Coalman you are absolutely right 4 + hours, this is my fault for not explaining cutting down on time. My first experience capturing a movie was Windows Movie Maker, with the Pinnacle/Dazzle, there wasn't an option to capture direct to disk. We now have the ADS Capture Device with the option of capturing direct to disk, my husband understood that option, I didn't because I said to him are you sure you don't want to capture in the Windows Movie Maker first, with the response of no, then proceeded to explain how this works. We certainly would want that option again in software and haven't a clue as to what to expect with the Canopus. I was looking at Ulead, Adobe and Canopus Software, reading over what they offered. In this case we will use the trial period which normally we don't do.

SHS, I won't buy "Let's Convert It" we already have it with the Nero, thank you for letting me know.

  6. Nelson37, I have already been warned about copying direct to disk with the sync problem. The Canopus will be delivered tomorrow, Wednesday, the only way I can handle this is experiment. I have seen pictures of the unit but in all reality haven't a clue as to what to expect, I know what I had.......

It' a LTBC, not the same as full frame TBC. If you want to learn more this is probably the best explanantion, there's images above this link and when the page loads they change the particular post it goes too, after it fully loads refresh to go to the correct one.:

There'slenty of people who don't use a TBC, it's not a mandatory device. Very nice to have but you don't "need" one unless you have some pretty crappy tapes.

Yup as thecoalman was saying and I think Barnabas maybe do this as well capture with Canopus ADVC 100/300 to do any edit and fix, etc, etc use the 100/300 output to Hardware MPEG Encoder like WinTV-PVR 150/250 other then that the only option is a Hardware Transcoder but there are none that are low cost one so the eazy way to this and save hours of waiting.
I don't do that but if possible would definitley help with encode times on a slow machine if you still wanted to edit using AVI....

VS9 is a pretty good product, don't knock it before you tried it. Comes with a version of the mainconcept encoder, feature rich editor, native AC3 support, the resiults are quite nice. biggest thing it lacks is highly customizable menus, but what do you expect for $90-100

My under standing thecoalman that ADVC 300 Line Time Base Correction (LTBC) functions for perfect frame synchronization. Poor analog source video is filtered and stabilized prior to DV conversion.
Which works the same way as TBC

The Canopus is great device for capping to DV format. Try using Virtual Dub to process the captured files. With that you can tweak the video, remove logos etc.
I am now starting to prepare for the Canopus delivery, wanted to look the Virtual Dub over but can't open the file up. I seen the extension .zip thought I was all right, with another extension .bz2, what zip program is being used to open this file up?

  11. Giselle,

    Just a plain zip file.

Try this link. I just downloaded and installed it from that link, so know it's working.

  12. Thank you very much Barnabas!

I was able to open up in WinZip the text files and read about this software, thank you very much.

LTBC syncs only a few lines at a time which will help for horizontal sync. Full frame TBC sync horizontal and vertical, LTBC does little to nothiong for vertical sync. For example if you have a tape that has the "jitters" , jumping vertically, LTBC isn't going to help or perform as well as full frame TBC.

  14. I want to send everyone who responded to this thread a Big Thank You for all the help, advice and links you supplied, plus taking your time to even respond. I took every message very seriously and appreciate the help very much. DVD, capturing, ect. is a whole new ball game for us and knew nothing about any of this other part of the computer world.

The Canopus arrived as scheduled, what a wonderful piece of equipment, very easy to install and learn, so far no more sync problems, hopefully this problem is nonexistent forever!

We finally figured out last night how to accomplish the task of capturing, we tried to use the Windows Movie Maker which works fine but we couldn't seem to burn this into Nero/Incd. I am sure we are maybe doing something wrong, but decided to capture using Nero and that was the answer for us. Now Nero is working just fine, apparently Nero has fallen in love with the new hardware, Canopus. Also want to say we aren't concerned about copying direct to disk anymore, we just capture in Nero and follow all the rest of the steps.

I haven't purchased any new software, perhaps maybe sometime later after experimenting and learning more as we go along.

    Thank You All!

I've lost track of what you are trying to do after capture but if your goal is a DVD, Windows Movie Maker won't do that. WMM is OK for WMV files and you can use it for capturing DV-AVI but that is about it.

You have a fine capture device with the ADVC-300. I suggest you next invest in appropriate software matched to your goals.

If you would restate your goals we can again make suggestions.

PS: it is possible with additional software to make a MPeg2 DVD from a WMV file but this is far from the best way.

  17. Thank you Barnabas, I am interested removing Logos.....

I wish I had known this a lot sooner EdDV, about the Windows Movie Maker, but that's all right, we sure learned some more and sometimes one has to learn the hard way because one thing does lead to another thing of learning. I went through the forum reading more threads plus looked into the list of tools. I would be foolish to say we won't need some appropiate software, for the time being the best thing is to experiment and see what we actually need. The Canopus seems to be a real nice piece of hardware, Nero sure likes it, all the functions now magically work!

The goal here for us, are to copy all of our VHS tapes, bought tapes and tapes recorded from the television, turn them all into DVD's. I realize there are many aspects to the Video Computer World but to answer your question about goals other then that is hard for me to say because several years ago I bought a graphic program, if asked then what do you want to accomplish with this software, I would have said, "Oh just tinker and do a little bit of graphics, that's all." Needless to say graphics are my passion, I would say in a big way, I had no idea at that time I would be this involved with graphic software, plugins, animation, ect. just about anything to do with computer graphics. We will have to see where this takes us........

I'm not a fan of NeroVision Express (part of the full Nero Ultra 6 package) but it will allow minor editing and DVD authoring.

Better programs IMO are (free demos downloadable)
    http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=932
    http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm
    http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/main.html

For best results capture to DV format, edit and then author the DVD.

For less important tapes, realtime MPeg2 encoding from the ADVC works best with the ULead Video Studio product considering your medium power computer.

A bit more geeky, but also with more control, you can look at
    http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda.html

Many of us use different products for different types of work. Try the demos first.

  19. Thank you EdDV, I have been busy doing a lot of research on the links you supplied. Unfortunately the Nero was very troublesome after writing the last message here and probably not the right software....

I went with the geeky one, Tsunami, this one I liked the best.

Thank you for taking your time for the help and advice, very much appreciated EdDV.
