  1. I've got a Philips DVD Player and have had it for about a year.I recently bought a really cheap 14inch 4:3 TV (Beko) for my bedroom as the room is small and has little space and I mainly watch TV in the living room most of the time anyway.
I have noticed that when playing my burnt DVD+R's and Retails's that there is like a curving in the picture around the edges of the screen. For example the film may show a straight object yet it is bent/curving,especially in scenes that are bright eg outdoor shots.
I have adjusted settings on the TV set and on my DVD Player but have not fixed this irritating artifact.I use a gold plated scart connection.Have tried different scart leads.
    What is causing this?
I cant recall noticing this when I used the same DVD player on my 21 inch Toshiba 4:3 TV set.
BTW it also happens on my Hitachi 21 inch 4:3 TV set also.
I'm going to try the DVD's on the Toshiba TV again,to see if I notice the artifact now I've recognised it.It just means wiring the damn thing up as I dont bother using the Toshiba anymore because the picture looks grainy compared to my other 2 TV's.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  2. Thanks edDV for such a fast response. So basically this would mean its the televisions fault as this does not happen on my PC's monitor.Or would it be the DVD player?I'm not sure as the link mentions lens.DVD lens?

I'd better start using my Toshiba again then as I dont have Pincushion distortion on that.

It would be the TV's alignment. Usually there is no user adjustment on a 14inch 4:3 TV. Are you sure this is unique to the DVD player? That would be odd.

Nothing in the DVD player would cause this.

    Thanks once again.

  7. Guys, since this topic is about pincusion distortion, I have a following question:

On many flat screen TVs I've seen (not LCD) a picture is skewed at approximately 30 degree angle. I can't figure out why. In an example of pincusion distortion, the picture becomes assimetric on the left and right edges. In my case, it is on the bottom.
Has anyone ever experienced it and knows what it is?

    Sounds like trapezoidal distortion.

Computer monitors have external adjustment contrrols. TV sets need to go to the shop for internal adjustment.

HDTV sets often have hidden external service menus to perform adjustments. These usually aren't referenced in the user manuals.

  9. I find this quite annoying. Its the year 2005 and they produce TV's that are useless compared to the ones made in the 80's and 90's.

They dont make quality, like in the olden days, just cheaply made trash.

TVs today are better than ones built in the 60's and 70's for convergence ..... also if you had to ever converge a analog TV circuit - it is one MAJOR pain in the ass compared to the digital convergence now in use ..

though the build quality of some in the 80s and 90s are very very good ..

The low end K-Mart type TV sets should be considered throw aways. Beware the lowest end Apex, Advent, et.al. Better to pay a few dollars more for a Japanese name even through those will also be made in China, Malaysia, etc. At least they have service support and the design quality is usually better.

BTW: Applying inflation, those $300 12" Sony Trinitrons introduced in the mid 70's cost the equivalent of $1000+ in todays dollars.
