Why do you expect that Saturday VideoHelp readers have experience with this deck? Shouldn't you have asked before bidding?

    According to Google, quick search.
    http://www.adorama.com/JVBRS822U.html

This is the first pro s-vhs deck that I have seen that doesn't list a S-Video output.

Component Y, Pb, Pr output should work fine with the Canopus ADVC-300. You would need to make BNC to RCA cables or use a BNC to RCA adapters. Equal cable length is important.

Composite NTSC would work as well at lower quality.

I hope this deck is in good condition, maintenance expenses can be high.

How much did you pay if I might ask?

PS: The ADVC-300 uses that odd D connector for Y, Pb, Pr in. I'd advise 3x BNC to female RCA adapters

Well if in "good condition" I might buy it from you at that price. It may or may not be the best for VHS but good for S-VHS. It had a plug-in TBC option.

Looking again, I see Y, Pb, Pr labeled as Y, R-Y, B-Y on that machine. That was the old labeling.

Looking again again I notice those connectors are on a screw in module that looks like this. (Next to the right side fan). You may or may not have it.

That link shows a blank in place of the component analog module.

NTSC Video out (Line1 or Line2) is your next best bet. Use a BNC to RCA adapter and plug into the ADVC-300 NTSC composite input.

  10. will that option be a lower grade video then say my S plug on my highergrade JVC VCR...which I think the S plug is the best option if so U wana buy it ?...let me make $20 for cleaning it and the torture...I think if I auction it off I can get close to 400$ u want it for...295$ ?

  11. You've got those JVC 7-pin "dub" s-video (Y/C) outputs on that unit. I think there are some adapters made for going from 7-pin s-video to consumer style 4-pin s-video. edDV might know where to get some.

The professional XLR type audio outputs will also have to be converted to unbalanced RCA. There are definitely adapters made for that (any music store that sells pro audio and mixers will have them). That unit might have a full frame TBC built in. If you tilt up the lower half of the front panel, there should be some switches and other adjustments hidden behind it. If you have a TBC, there will probably be some proc amp controls there. Although I don't see a TBC remote jack on the back...

Composite will be normal NTSC. The Canopus ADVC-300 will need to do the Y/C split and decode but still may have OK results. S-Video out (if present) would send the Y/C from the tape to the S_Video connector without the encode-decode.

If you are selling it PM me. I'd want to have you run some tests first.

Yes, some work needs to be done to figure out what you have and its condition. Since the original auction site resold it through a 3rd party, they may have gutted the good parts like the TBC.

As for balanced XLR audio to unbalanced RCA, that can be done with Radio Shack Parts and a soldering iron.

I'm not familliar with the JVC 7-pin without research.

The traditional Sony (U-Matic and Betacam) dub connector distributed the modulated tape head RF on their similar "dub connector".

  15. Ed, thanks for your time... I dont think they would have gutted the parts since its a gov lqui seller...if they had a video shop ya I agree... For me to ship it to u it to checkout would cost $50 ...the main thing im talking about bottom line is better video quality trasnsfers...can i get that rigging the supervcr ...if the big vcr unit wont or cant really improve the quality over my reg jvc VCR then Ill sell it...its soo big I dont eevn know where ill set it up in my house?ha ha... whatever I can sell it to u or on ebay with less hassles then my mistake buying it I guess

I think B&H sells s-video cables that will fix you up on the video side.

And cables to go has cables that should work on the audio side

    That looks good.

So here is what you do in your situation to make this work best.

    1. get 7pin male to 4pin S-Video out cable to Canopus ADVC-300.

Alternatively (less quality) is use BNC video out to RCA composite in on the ADVC-300.

    2. buy or make two XLR to RCA audio cables to Canopus ADVC-300.

    and it should work.

You are lucky that you have the ADVC-300 because the key feature missing on that deck for computer capture is the internal TBC. Most of the features on that deck apply to tape editing from timebase corrected sources and are of limited use for this application.

I've looked around the net for the plug-in TBC modules and they are few in number and expensive. It's much cheaper to buy a machine with the TBC installed. The manuals are also expensive.

I would use this deck only for dubbing tapes to the computer, not for general viewing. Save the heads for serious work. The quality could range from excellent to poor depending on the condition of the machine.

If you want to use this machine for recording, you will need to buy or make a set of cables for video and audio in.

I would expect the JVC S822u to have much less horizontal jitter than a home VCR due to the sophistication of its mechanical tape path and high quality servos*. Home VCR's are assumed to be only feeding modern TV sets that have a wide H and V lock range.

The line TBC (LTBC) in the Canopus ADVC-300 should offer more than enough range for the S822U.

*servos are the electrical control systems that control speed and stability of linear tape path and head rotation motors. Servos can only stabilize to millisecond H jitter. The job of the TBC is to reduce this jitter to sub 100 microsecond (for component recorders) or less than +/- 10 nanoseconds for direct recording formats like 1" type C.

thanks for ur feedback Ed I started to wonder when looking on ebay I saw the same model JVC S822u only it had a remote TBC plug in the back and it already had a bid of a $100 more then I paid for mine with 10hrs left to go...so I said to myself ...self u either got a good deal or u paid too much for a unit without a important component "TBC" ..it might be a little of both...I guess time will tell...tks again Ed

Yes 7-pin out to S-Video in on ADVC-300.

S-VHS has 2 linear tape audio tracks and 2 Hi-Fi tracks that are recorded with video. A home recorder usually puts the same audio on both but if the VHS machine was not Hi-Fi, then those Hi-Fi tracks will be missing.

As for the S822U TBC, the external clue to its presence is the TBC Remote and Y, R-Y, B-Y BNC connectors on the back. There are also a couple of PC cards inside.

Make sure the ADVC-300 TBC is turned on and don't forget it also has proc amp controls.
