I use TMPGEnc for converting my avi -files to MPEG2 (CBR) and it's doing that perfect. However when I try to cut videos it will freeze/crash the program.
I have read many message here regarding this matter and tried the tricks, but no luck. I have tried versions 12, 12a and 12h and the same problems persists. The program joins and converts with no problems.
My computer is AMD Athlon 1 GHz, MSI K7T-T motherboard, 256 RAM, Studio DC10+, Maxtor 30 GB 7200 rpm, Maxtor 40 GB 5400 rpm, Liteon CD and CD-RW.
Does anybody has any suggestions? I really need some help here. I have tried several other programs:
MPEGTool - no preview
MPEGEdit - works very slow, freezes and preview sucks
MPEG2VCR - works, but only for MPEG1 and MPEG2 costs over $200
CinePlayerEditor - only for MPEG1
If TMPGEnc can't be fixed to work, does anyone know other GOOD cutting tools?

Here is what works for me every time and I quote it from Sefy's DVD2AVI DVD Conversion help aid -
Quote
"Since most movies are longer then 74min or 80min (like this example) goto Settings, Advanced, Source Range, Mark it and Double click it to select start and end frames for Part 1 of encoding, when you are done, confirm and start encoding." Unquote
It is referring to TMPGEnc of course.

If you really want to cut (I do - I burn the whole movie all at once so that the ending credits unused bandwidth can get spread through the rest of the movie and not just the last half), use BBMPeg (see edit tab at the left). It takes 2 or three tries to get it right, but
I first tell it to split at 790 MB - then I look at the video and figure out a time where it would be good to cut anywhere within a couple of seconds. Then I enter that time (plus 4 seconds - hey - it's what works for me) into BBMpeg and I'm all set.
It's a bit of a pain because you have to demux your mpeg, but since I use CCE and Toolame to encode SVCDs, my stuff isn't muxed yet so it's only 1 extra muxing if things go well. -
I also had trouble with TMPGenc it would cut one half of the film and then lock up the machine. I found another prog. that is a lot easier to use, you have to pay for registration which is about 20dollars (I think) and it is called VCDCutter. All you do is tell it where the mpeg is where you want to save the cut parts and how many parts you want it cut into it then saves the files as mpegs ready to burn, I have been using this for a few weeks now with no probs. If You need any more help email me at G.aryHall@btinternet.com

Quick question...does the program actually crash or does it just freeze? I ask because especially on cutting the second part, it takes a while. I thought I had this problem too until I read a thread that said just let it sit when you're cutting the second half. I'm sure if you let it sit for a while and then look at it later you'll see that when it seems it's freezing it's actually just taking a long time to find the files.

Gambit - I agree....it takes a while on subsequent cuts for it to get to the point to begin the cut. I hope that makes sense.

I have the same freezing problem when trying to split my mpeg. Did any of this stuff work.
I heard about vcd cutter but read that it is not vcd compliant and will not play in my dvd
any suggestions -
Again, for the second cut...choose where you're going to cut and your output file and then hit run. Now let it sit. IT'S GOING TAKE A A LITTLE TIME TO FIND THE FILES BUT IT IS WORKING AND NOT NECCESARILY FREEZING.

gambit32,
You might be right. The program freezes, not craches.
One time I was waiting for some minutes (maybe about 5 min) and it was still "on hold" and I thought that it stopped working and forced it down. I might be too hasty with the program.
Next time I will let it stay like that for longer time and hopefully it will continue.
I will test it today and let you all know if it worked. I will also try all the ideas I got here, thanks a lot!

There is something I found for myself: In the Cut-Window BEFORE doing anything else, let the movie play for 1 or 2 seconds and then press stop again. Then TMPGenc will work without freezing. If I select a start/end-time or push the slider, it freezes. Another thing that works: do not encode as SVCD-Stream, but "normal" MPEG2, and when cutting create a SVCD-Stream. This works too.

If you have WinDVD installed, use DVDGenie to unregister the directshow filters.
TMPEnc will then cut and merge MPEG2 streams just fine.

Ok, last night I tried all the tricks with TMPGEnc but unfortunately nothing worked. The damn program still freezes (I waited 2 hours and it was still in "freeze mode" and I had to kill it) and I'm still not able to get my MPEG2s edited (cut).
I will now give up and I have to believe that it will not work in my system. I need to get another cutting program for cutting my SVCDs.
Thanks for everybody for trying to find a solution for my problem!

i experienced some problems cutting a 1.5GB MPEG with TMPGEnc and discovered that my virtual memory setting (watching sysmon) for win98 was not adequate. with 256MB of memory, i was using a fixed swapfile size of 512MB, twice memory, but this was not enough. what got me through the "cut" was setting my swapfile size min to 512MB and max to 1024MB.
