  1. I am attempting to back up my DVD collection. I am experiencing difficulty in properly extracting an intact DVD disc with MTR.

I have read the MTR directions and follow them accordingly, but the ripped VIDEO_TS file will not even run properly with the DVD Player on my Powerbook. All I am able to view is the English and French initial screens, and then it freezes. The DVD's menu never appears, and instead an error message appears.

    The error message reads:

DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from.
The disk copy protection could not be verified. The disk cannot be played. [-70025]

Previously, I attempted to use the MTR ripped VIDEO_TS file to burn a DVD using my newly purchased (and updated to version 1.0.3) Popcorn program. However, this DVD only showed the English/French language introduction (warning) screens. The full 4-plus gigs were copied to the DVD, the DVD was mounted, etc., but it was unplayable.

Any help or advice as to how I can correct this problem would be MOST appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Also: I have a newly purchased 1.5 GHz Powerbook with Mac OS 10.4 Tiger.

Have you tried playing the original DVD in DVD Player first? I believe this must be done in order for the encryption key to be determined and made available for MTR in the next step.

  3. Thank you for the suggestion. I just tried playing some of the DVD. I ran the first few minutes of the movie and I played a few seconds of each chapter. However, the same error message came up after the English/French warnings when I tried to play the ripped file on DVD Player.

    Any other suggestions?

    ok, you missed it.
First, TRASH the MTR ripped output, you are starting
    all over again.

Next, with the output from MTR trashed, put the original
    DVD back in Powerbook.

Third, make sure your DVD Player app is 4.61,
which was released a few days back.
if not, then update it and then reboot.
(Be sure to eject the DVD at this point).

With DVD Player 4.61 installed, Put the ORIGINAL DVD
back into the powerbook, and play until you get past the French/English stuff until you actually see something
that says/ looks like the opening credits. then, STOP.

    Close DVD Player 4.61.

    Open MTR 2.66.

Let it scan the disc, it should now pick up all correct keys.
    rip to your HD.

Once rip is done, eject the disc. Close MTR. Open DVD Player 4.61
Navigate to the ripped folder using Open Video_TS folder.
    Play.

If it goes further than before, success, now go process with Popcorn.

If it doesn't, then post back.

I figured as much GB, but him being a new user & all,
I figured he might not have SET HIS DRIVE CORRECTLY
TO THE PROPER REGION, being that he was having errors
in his rips appear, which not setting your region for the first
time on your mac BEFORE ripping your first disc can cause
    symptoms like his....

    thus my steps...

Just for grins, try 0SeX to do the ripping. I'm wondering if you might have a pooched setting in MTR. What is the name of the DVD, by the way?

  12. The DVD that I have been trying to rip is Airplane! I have also tried trashing MTR and then re-installing it, but that did not work.

Where can I get this other ripping program? How is it different?

It may be that there is something odd about this particular disk. Usually, MTR is the most reliable of the ripping programs and it doesn't require that the disk first be played by DVD player, as most others do. However, every so often you'll run into a disk that produces buggy results or crashes MTR, but will rip fine with one of the others. The two main alternatives are OSeX and DVDBackup. they're all free, so . . .

    a) Try another disk with MTR, just to see if you really do have a problem with that program

    b) Try one of the other programs. I've had good luck with DVDBackup on a couple of disks that MTR had trouble with. (DVDBackup DOES require that you play a chapter or two of the disk with DVD player first, because it accesses the database of protection codes that is created by DVD Player.)

  14. For me, YADE X always does the job in those rare cases MTR fails.

I also use MTR to rip movie to my HD but in order to play it on my Mac I had to get Matinee VIDEO_TS Launcher
    http://matinee.dizandat.com/
Very nice program; works like a charm.

    miger,
why? Do you do this for EVERY Rip?
Why did you not use DVD Player
( came with your mac?) and just
    go File-->Open Video TS...?

This is all I've every had to do....for DVD structured content.
I use VLC to view and play VCDs, .mkv, and some .avis
    and .wmvs.

What does this app do that DVD Player and/or VLC cannot?

  17. Thank you to all of you who gave me suggestions on how to solve my problem. I returned home from vacation yesterday, and I tried two other DVDs, both of which were ripped flawlessly. I guess I just had bad luck with the Airplane! DVD, and it confounded me since it was the first DVD I tried.

Do you guys have a favorite (free) alternate program that you turn to in the rare cases that MTR does not work?

    Thanks again.
